About meIn general I’m outgoing and a bit out there. I love being goofy, and acting a bit insane with whoever is willing to join me. I love laughing and making people laugh; I have a bit of a mischievous streak and a quirky sense of humor.

Obviously I like to read if I’m here, but I also enjoy watching movies, even the ones I’ve already seen 10 times; especially if I get to watch my friends reaction to my favorite parts. I enjoy going out and doing random stuff – like going out for Chinese food in the middle of a snowstorm, just because. Or taking advantage of a random ice storm by ice-skating on the parking lot at 2 am. My favorite is kidnapping friends and taking them out to dinner.

I got my degree in physics. I had a blast doing it and I am now trying to put that degree to good use. Though multiple people have told me that I’m not a typical physics person. Should I find that insulting? I mean I am a physics person. I love physics, and miss it, but then seeing as how I work in a bookstore, and train horses, and don’t talk about physics at the dinner table, maybe they do have a point . . . oh well. Lol. :-P

And lastly I love quotes, but only when they mean something to me . . .

“I do not have a psychiatrist and I do not want one, for the simple reason that if he listened to me long enough, he might become disturbed.” - James Thurber

“Reality is the leading cause of stress amongst those in touch with it.” – Jane Wagner

Note: My user name comes from Jim Butcher's third book in his Codex Alera Series, Cursor's Fury.

My Reading Style:
I really enjoy fantasy with a bit of romance thrown in every now and again. Up until Harry Potter I had never read a fantasy novel, and wasn't even that big of a reader. (I had always resented the books they made us read in high school.) And now, ever since I realized there was this whole genre full of books ready to take me to all different worlds I’m enjoying getting “lost.” I love all the daydreaming that reading opens up to you. For someone whose mind never turns off, it makes for much more pleasant down time. ^_^

I don’t just read adult fantasy. I find both teen and young adult books enchanting and often times enjoy them more then some of the adult novels I have read. There’s something special about books not written for adults. The best way of describing it sometimes is that they are more simple and sometimes a bit more innocent. I hate when an author tries to create some great, amazing, world coming to an end, lost and emotional/physically downtrodden but now found hero, epic fantasy; oh and we can't forget the token romance part, and fails for the trying. I also hate books with treachery as a main theme, and books that are overall depressing/sad and I cut down on that when I read the younger stuff.

I love books that make me cheer out loud, laugh, and squirm, or stamp my foot in anger while reading. I REALLY get into my books, and take them personally. My old roommates used to say it was fun to listen to me read. lol.

Though I’ve finally read enough that I’m now picky and may not finish a series that I’ve started if it isn’t to my liking, I’m always looking for new books and any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. (Even if my yet to be read list is ever growing, lol.)

No I haven't read that book but I am intrigued. I like to read books that evoke unexpected feelings. I might have to look into it.
Hi

I just got give the Percy Jackson book by my mother so it is sitting on the TBR pile now. I seem to be inundated with books at the moment my amazon ordered books arrived, my library requested books arrived, got books recently for my birthday. I usually give library books priority as they are hard to get sometimes so Percy has slipped in the TBR order. Working through Jasper Ffords "Next Amongst sequels" currently.

I am not embarrassed to admit I read kiddie books any more as I find a lot of them are more sophisticated these days then some "grown up" books.

Oh got the new Harry Dresden book in the mail today SOOOOOOO excited. Will have to wait though till I get an uninterrupted weekend as I cant bear to have to put an exciting book down and wait a whole day while I go to work LOL.

Cheers
Hi Cursors

Ah was going to post you a note to recommend the Ranger's Apprentice series but I see you have already discovered it. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I am, I have just ordered books 3 and 4 from the library.

Cheers
Hi, CS ~ Well to answer your questions, "So I see that you finished Captain's Fury. What did you think? Are you in love with the Codex Alera books like me and Irish? Don't they get better with each new book? Do you have a favorite?":

I like them very much. I haven't been reading a lot of this kind of epic fantasy lately (as opposed to urban fantasy), so it was a treat to discover this series (thanks to you and Irish pointing the way, of course). My favorite was Cursor's Fury, though I thought Captain's Fury was wonderful, esp. now that Tavi is coming into his own. I'm really looking forward to the next one, to see what new talents and strengths he picks up in the land of the Cane and how he manages to turn them into allies (as he seems to be able to do with pretty much every enemy he's met so far), and then I guess only one more after that? :( I really like the humor in these, which is different from Harry Dresden's brand of humor, and the relationship between Tavi and Kitai is so exciting. I mean, I don't usually like the hero's woman in these kinds of fantasies, they're usually idiots or annoying in some way, but Kitai is so cool!
I think that Twilight is one of THE most toxic stories ever. Bella is overly obsessed and only thinks of a boy...not just any boy though. An abusive one. Edward is domineering and borderline violent. He stalks her. Watches her while she sleeps and she finds it endearing. She thinks that her life is completely and utterly ruined if she can't have his love. In one scene she is attacked and Edward comes to rescue her...rather then offering her comfort no he demands that she prattle on in her insane juvinile way because HE needs to be calmed down. There is no plot. 3/4 of the book is all about Bella droaning on and on about how absolutly beautiful Edward is. How much she loves him. And how she'd do anything just to be with him. The 100 or so pages of actual plot are contrived. Unrealistic. And over and done with before you even realize that there is finally some action going on. By the time you do its over and Bella is going on and on about how wonderful Edward is again. The vampire aspect of the book is small. Meyers tries to put a different spin on it...one in which she clearly lives up to her statement that she knew nothing about vampires before she wrote about them...her vampires fall flat. None of the secondary characters have much substance. Overall, I think that it presents a very unhealthy look at relationships and sends a bad picture to all the teenage girls who read the book and look up to it. This book says that domineering controlling boyfriends is good. Bella is also a very weak heroine. There is no substance to her. What is there in this book to idolize? I don't get how so many people are so in love with it. For me its got to be the biggest piece of garbarge that I've read in a long time. There are so many other great vampire stories out there. So many great teen love stories. I hope that this one burns out sooner rather than later.

Tell me. What is it that you liked about it? I really don't understand. And please don't come back with the statement that Edward is so dreamy. A few of my friends said that and to me its not a convincing arguement.
Hi, CF ~ Just wanted to say thank you for recommending the Codex Alera series. I finished The Furies of Calderon the other day and absolutely loved it! I've got the other three now and plan to start Academ's Fury tonight.

I'm glad you said that they got better as they went along, because, for the first 1/3 of the book, I wasn't thrilled. But, I figured I'd keep going, finish at least the one, so I could say I tried. Well, by the time I was halfway into it, I was getting really hooked, and toward the end, I couldn't put it down and read late into the night to the end (to the detriment of my ability to do my job the next day ~ lol).

Anyway, just thought I'd say you and Irish were too right!
Hi Cursorsfury

You have an amazing collection of books in your library. Hopefully I will be able to find some books I can read from your recommendations.

Hi CursorsFury (great name & great book!)

Believe it or not, I actually haven't read Captain's Fury yet! I know it's probably fantastic because I love everything Jim Butcher writes. If you've read it, do tell...how was it?

I'm having a hard time answering your question about my favorite Jim Butcher series. As you know, they are so different in terms of genre/writing style. I initially started out with his Dresden Files (of which I am proudly obsessed) and then I read Furies of Calderon and was blown away. Bottom line, I'll read anything the man writes!

Happy reading,

Tina
I agree any talks of truce should involve Aislinn and that the idea of using love as a weapon isn't a good one. It doesn't send the right message. Also, what I didn't get was that if Summer and Winter are so different then how did Keenan's father and mother ever get together? Hopefully that will all get explained in future books.

I'm looking forward to Ink Enchange as well. I think it will be interesting to see how Marr's develops her world of faerie. Marr is also planning on writing a Manga series that involve the Winter Girl's who became free from their duties. Those should be out some time in 2009.
I thought that Stardust was ok. I read it after watching the movie and found that there were many parts of the movie that I liked better than the book. The characters also seemed a little more developed in the movie than the book. I have his American Gods book putting around here, I'll get to at some point and I'll be able to develop a better idea on Gaiman. I think that the movie clouded my thoughts too much when it came to Stardust.
I know EXACTLY what you mean. To me Tavi is no longer a character in a book he just is. The whole world of Alera is so vividly drawn that it is almost impossible to think that it doesn't exist.

I also feel the same way about the books as you do. I loved Furies when I read it. Then I read Academ's and Cursor's and with each one I thought, these books are so great and Furies just sucks in comparison. Though I know that it truly a book most excellent when compared to other books outside the Alera world. I have given the first 3 to a friend of mine who liked the Dresden books and keep telling her to read them. However, when giving her books 2 & 3 I raved so much about them and kept saying just how much more spectacular they are in comparison to the first one that she finally told me to stop. She was like you are making me not want to read Furies and to just skip to Academ's. To which I told her quite firmly. Oh no you must start at the beginning. There is so much that happens there that it can't be missed...and to read Furies really makes you appreciate Tavi and all that is to come.

I plan on starting Captain's as soon as the early reviewer books that I have are done. I really want to read it, but don't at the same time. The not wanting to read comes solely from the fact that its the last one published to date. I came into the series a little late and have been able to bounce from one book to the next. Relishing in each new tale. Once I finish Captain's its going to be a long wait until December. Not too long ago I was really looking forward to Small Favor coming out...but after Cursor's I just don't have that same anticipation. Not sure if I'd ever like the Dresden Files if I started on the Alera series first. Harry is just so different than Tavi, he isn't as real.
Yes it does go above and beyond. The book just blew me away. I didn't want to put it down and when I look back on Furies of Calderon I think that the book sucks. And that was a good book. I love how JB shows Tavi's mental growth. So many characters in such epic stories remain fairly one dementional. But Tavi really grows. He isn't a child anymore. He is a force to be reckoned with. Cursor's Fury also ended the tie between JB's two series. Codex Alera by far is better than that wizard guy. ;-)
Just popping in to wish you and your family a very Happy Holiday. =)
I actually started to read Furies of Calderon today on the train...and I am really liking it so far. Its totally different from the Dresden books and if I didn't know better I'd swear that it was a different author entirely. Its not just the setting and type of fantasy that's differnt...that I expected. Its the general tone of the novel that is so different. There can be a heaviness at times in the dresden books...there is so much evil that he must face with often little more then his charm and sarcastic comments to hold him while he waits for an opening to attack magically. So far Furies is lighter. Not that there is any less evil...but its only the first book...I'm sure that the truly bad haven't made their appearance yet in this bid for the thrown and the beatly enemies that are a constant threat to the human populations.

Harry and friends will always be a love of mine...but I think that Amara and Tavi will be sitting right up there beside Harry before this book is done.
" do have one question that I know is a spoiler question but I'm curious if Dresden ever gets off his "probation" that I found mentioned in the first two chapters and in later discussions on the books."

Rather than post the answer generally as it is a spoiler, I thought it better to reply here

if you prefer to keep the suspense then delete this now.....

The probation I believe you are talking about is the Curse of Damocles (sp?) this is a fairly major subplot throughout the first book and is resolved at the end of that book - and as there are future books it is safe to say he doe snot get his head cut off..... There continues to be a lot of tension between Harry and the Council - the precise laws of magic how and when they can be bent of broken etc etc form quite a few subplots through each book. Proven Guilty is another book where they take quite a major role, and it is all the better for it. The Laws are part of the continued narrative tension that makes the sum of the series so much better than each book as a standalone.
Hey there...I just read your comments about The Codex Alera Series on the Jim Butcher board...and you've inspired me to dig out my copy of the first book and read it. (Or at least move it to near the top of my queue. Once I start taking the train into work again I am going to go through a lot of books.) I've been a little wary of his other series because I haven't wanted to be disappointed.

Have you read any of the dresden files? I think it would be interesting to hear your comparison on the two different styles and characters.
From your profile:

"I got my degree in physics. I had a blast doing it and I am now trying to put that degree to good use. (Though multiple people have told me that I’m not a typical physics person.)"

I'm a physicist in a non-traditional physics job as well, so I'm interested in what you're doing with your degree these days. I got an MS in particle physics, then went on to work on radiation effects in spacecraft. Got the PhD for building a neutron detector to fly on a NASA balloon, then switched to system engineering to work technical management for spacecraft programs for NASA. How about you?

Anyway, welcome to LT! It's nice to have a physic compadre around!
