After I tried unsuccessfully all of the export methods from Book Collector that LibraryThing should have imported but could not, I tried just pointing the import tool at my Book Collector data file and VIOLA! it worked. For the most part, anyway. I have about 1300 books catalogued in Book Collector, and 937 imported into LibraryThing, which is not too bad. Oh, I almost forgot, you have to have a visible column in Book Collector for ISBN -- LibraryThing imports by ISBN number and anything without an identifiable ISBN number won't import.

Feel free to ask me if you get stuck. I may have overlooked something.
