Actually, Beka Cooper is George's Great, great, great g'ma I think. His mother begins the prologue telling her story, but she is someway back in the time line. Beka is probably my favorite by far though. Lots of spunk and fierceness. And all the books on my list are excellent and some of my top favs. If you're daughter is ever looking for suggestions, just shot me a note :) I would be glad to help out.
Have you read the Beka Cooper one? It's one of my favorites....
I see that you have a couple Bill Bryson books in your library. I enjoy Bryson's travelogue style of mixing personal experience, facts about the locales, and interesting side stories. I especially liked In a Sunburned Country. It made me want to visit Australia. A Walk in the Woods was pretty good too, but Bryson definitely has a strong dislike of the strip-mall aspect of America, and he makes it the most apparent in his book The Lost Continent: Travels in Small-Town America. I read that book when my husband and I drove from Florida to Indiana when we moved up here, thinking it would complement my road trip, but his criticism made me lose interest in the book.
