About meMy name is Brenda. I live in Los Angeles and am married with no kids. Like most, if not all people here I am an avid reader. I like to own the books I read, so I seldom borrow. Call it hoarding if you want, but there's nothing lovelier to me than a room full of books and so, I buy everything I read and keep it. Also, I tend to buy books "as I go" meaning if I don't intend to read it immediately after I purchase it, I probably will not get it for a long time. For that reason, I just keep a very up-to-date wishlist on Amazon :-)

I am not a book snob. I think some people like to read to learn something new and some people like to get away from their everyday lives and be entertained. I'm a little bit of both. Whatever one's preference, so long as one is reading, I believe it's ALL good!!

I always love to meet fellow readers, so if you're reading this, please, say hello!

About my libraryI own all the books on my list and have read most, with the exception of those marked "Unread" and a handful of others.

I love History, Historical Fiction, Chick-lit and biographies. I guess I'm kinda all over the place. Having seen some other people's lists, I know I am not alone in that :-)

You'll find some of my books are rated, most are not-I'm indecisive and can only rate those I feel strongly about either because they were really good, or really bad. I seem to have trouble with "in the middle" :-)

Hi,

The book you won in November's batch of Early Reviewer books, Sima's Undergarments for Women, is available for review only in PDF format. So - we need your email address! Can you email me (abby@librarything.com) with your email address and user name, so we can get you access to the book?

Thanks!
Abby
Hey Brenda - It's Mrs. B. from Fiction Lovers on IV. Glad to have found you. And now, I'm off to browse your library! ;)
Hello Brenda,
Thank you for responding so pleasantly to my meagre message.

You're right, of course; "interesting" is a very ambivalent term, too equivocal to be any use ;)
What I meant by the word, I guess, was something like "well worth watching" or "rather attractive"

I was attracted by your comment that there's nothing lovelier "than a room full of books." With one or two (maybe three) notable exceptions (enjoyment-wise) I'd probably agree with that observation. A glass of Rioja would be a strong contender for fourth place! Or a house full of books, I suppose (taking "room" too literally).

I was intrigued by your remark that "like most, if not all people here I am an avid reader." Surely you cannot mean LA, or has it changed a lot since I was there! I guess you mean your more immediate neighbourhood, or is the "here" in question metaphysical, less topographic? (The LT forum, perhaps).

I'm always anxious (and alarmed) that avid readers, generally, are the planet's most endangered species. Enemies keep whispering I'm paranoid about it, but I don't think I am. What do you reckon?

Most of all I'm relieved you are "not a book snob." Snobs, as such, are totally repellent; with a little learning they are frighteningly dangerous. And prolific (with or without any; usually the latter.)
Snobs are the planet's most dangerous species, as a matter of fact.

Hasta la vista
R.
An interesting profile
Though we don't share many titles, I didn't want to pass by without saying hello (since you invite same)
So, howdy!
And all the best.

When/if you end up reading the HP books keep in mind that the first two are more "kiddie" than the rest. I used to not like them as much, but compared to how "dark" the new ones have been it's good to read back and see a more lighthearted Hogwarts. :)

I'd love to read some fiction so if you have any recommendations on that front I'd really appreciate it!

I haven't actually started with the chick lit as I haven't really been reading much lately. For shame, I know! :( I just looked through the books we have in common and unless I missed something I don't see Emily Giffin, so I recommend her! Something Borrowed and then Something Blue. Her latest is called Baby Proof and I thought it was pretty good. :)
Hey there! I know what you're talking about with The Birth of Venus -- most people I know didn't love it like I did (except the one who recommended it to me!) -- but I really loved it -- in fact, I remember standing in Borders reading the first part and thinking there was no way I could NOT buy it -- I was completely hooked by the body "tatoo!"

Anyway, I am still on my Anne Lamott kick -- I finished Plan B, moved on to Traveling Mercies, and I've just started Operating Instructions, about the first year of her son's life. I'm really enjoying her writing, and looking forward to seeing her at a local signing in March (when her new book comes out). For our book group meeting next week I still have to read "Where I Was From" by Joan Didion, and from what I've heard from other people in the group, it is a bit tedious. We'll see.

Definitely get Innocent Traitor and Boleyn Inheritance!!!! And I really enjoyed Constant Princess a lot -- I liked how it was told from two different perspectives.

I keep meaning to read Pride & Prejudice too (can you believe I never have!?) -- I love going to Classics every once in a while.... Not sure what I'm going to do after my book group book -- maybe I'll go back to The Echo Maker, which I stopped a few weeks ago, but not because I didn't like it, only because something else must have caught my eye!!

Let me know if you get to You're Not You -- I'll be curious to see what you think. And I'm going to look up And Only to Deceive and Mr. Emerson's Wife -- I've not heard of those :-)
Dear chick-lit reader,

I’m a belgian university student that loves chick-lit. Would you like to help me with my thesis and write to me why you (personally) like reading chick-lit? What is it about chick-lit that appeals to you? What are your favourite books and why? Your help would mean a lot to me!

Best wishes,

it seems like everyone i share books with is named brenda :) i see you must be a dave matthews fan as well!! kudos! so many books, so little time! thanks for stoppin by and feel free to offer suggestions anytime!!
Ooh I haven't read that one yet! I'll add it to my list. :)

I've been re-reading the Harry Potter books. -.- Moving on to some "chick lit" that I got from booksfree.com soon, though!

Thank you! I hope you're having a great 2007. :D
Hi Brenda! Thanks for stopping by my site... It's been a while since I updated my list -- I stopped at 200 books and never really went back, though I keep meaning to. Anyway... I see that you like historical fiction, which has been my most recent obsession. Don't know if you've read all the Philippa Gregory books yet or not, but I loved them. Her most recent one, The Boleyn Inheritance, was almost as good as The Other Boleyn Girl -- I absolutely loved it. I also loved Innocent Traitor by Alison Weir, which I bought from Amazon UK because it's not out in the US yet. I started The Autobiography of Henry VIII by Margaret George, but have been reading other things in between. I also really enjoyed The Birth of Venus, which I saw on your list.
Currently I'm reading Plan B by Anne Lamott and loving it. I knew she was great -- don't know why it took me so long to pick her up! And I just finished You're Not You by Michelle Wildgen -- very very good book!!
I see that you also like to own your books -- I'm the same way. The thought of a library makes me nuts! I like to buy them at used bookstores, because I like the idea of someone else having enjoyed the same book. But I will never ever get rid of mine. I have multiple copies of my favorite books so I can loan them, and if I find books with different covers from the ones I have, I often but those too.
I'd love to hear about what your recent reads are, as well as what you have coming up!
Hey! It's always nice to meet another Audrey Hepburn fan. :)

I liked what you wrote about not being a book snob. So many people look down on people who read "chick lit", but, as you said, one reads it to be entertained. I also like reading Historical Biographies so I'm off to peek at your list and get ideas. -.-
Hi Brenda!
Thanks for the info! Hopefully I will get this figured out!
Sara
Hi Brenda! This site is definitely addicting! Nice to see other Fiction Lovers here!
Hey Brenda!

Welcome to LibraryThing! So far we have only 12 books in common, maybe once you get your entire library we will have more. I looked through your catalog and have already noticed several books I'd like to read. I thought I had read quite a few books but after joining I quickly realized I have some work to do!
Talk to you soon!
