I know you didn't like the book, but your review of The Lost Art of Dress has inspired me to look further into it, so thank you. I'm interested in social history, and social history of mores & tastes especially, but not in 2014 tips on dressing to fit in/impress--and your review made it very clear that the book is the former and has nothing to do with the latter. (And interesting question you ask re open-toe shoes. Perhaps they were frowned upon because they're so casual--a bit like tarted-up sandals, really--or because toes are generally thought rather ugly? or, more far-fetched, because they originally were looked upon as cheap because they require less leather?)

No idea where it came from, but like your user name. Cheers.
