About meA typical bibliophile ... if it's printed, I like it. My collection has been haphazard and eclectic, and spans more than 30 years; I started collecting books when I was about 8 years old.

About my libraryI have, at conservative estimate, more than 20,000 books. At present, only about a tenth of those are not in storage. I need more space!

My oldest book was printed in 1766. I love to collect old books, and I have a beautiful collection of sextodecimo- and smaller volumes.

My best find was a 22-volume limited edition (87 of 210) set of Tolstoy, leather-bound, printed in 1904 by Dana Estes and Company; the tooling and gilt-work on the red leather, and the marbled end pages, are some of the most beautiful work I've ever seen. I bought it at a garage sale 14 years ago for $300, a real bargain!

Now if I could just get my hands on one of those handmade "Tales of Beedle the Bard" by JK Rowling....

"Optimism is a strategy for making a better future. Because unless you believe that the future can be better, it's unlikely you will step up and take responsibility for making it so. If you assume that there's no hope, you guarantee that there will be no hope. If you assume that there is an instinct for freedom, there are opportunities to change things, there is a chance you may contribute to making a better world. The choice is yours."
