So will I build my altar in the fields,
And the blue sky my fretted dome shall be,
And the sweet fragrance that the wild flower yields
Shall be the incense I will yield to thee.

- Samuel Taylor Coleridge
I completely agree with you about Cornwell. I tend to focus on his medieval type novels more so, but I need to read his Sharpe series at some point. The Archer's Tale was actually the book that got me hooked on reading him. I loved the Grail Quest series and am thoroughly enjoying the Saxon Chronicles. I hear his Arthurian novels are also great.

As for Tolkien, I think he is probably the most lyrical, creative, imaginative author I've read. His language is very poetic, especially his landscape descriptions. Beautiful stuff. He has greatly influenced my own writing, particularly in the areas of rhythm and pacing and symbolic imagery.

Always nice to find other fans of Cornwell. I'm currently finishing up the Saxon Chronicles. Still have Lords of the North and Sword Song to read. What's your favorite series by Cornwell?

And of course, you have to love Tolkien.
