About me"I wanted the feeling of romance and the sense of wonder I had known as a kid. I wanted the world to be what they had promised me it was going to be - instead of the tawdry, lousy, fouled-up mess it is."

After learning to read in the age of 3, there were few years when I'm sure I read a lot, but then, at the age of 7, I stumbled upon a small book called "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" and that was that. And I haven't looked back since.

Then, at the age of 13, I had to learn to read in English, since there wasn't a Finnish translation for the rest of the "The Hitchhiker's Guide" -books. Only the first one was available.

These two incidents seem to be responsible for everything ;)

About my libraryAll books in this library are the ones I have in my possesion. This is no wish list.

Contains about one fifth of the books I have managed to read so far. Most of the Science Fiction (and Nero Wolfe) that I have read came from the library. The excellent level of Finnish libraries is partly the blame and partly the blame lies in the fact that online shopping hasn't been around long enough.

There are some notable gaps in my library. Most of the PERN books, most of Asimov and Clarke and others. (Addition #1: 09/09/08 - have ordered more of Asimov, Clarke and other older sci-fi books from Play.com)
(Addition #2: 22/09/08 - gaps also include Stout, Christie and other mystery/crime writers. As soon as I get my SF collection up to date, I will buy them...)

Other source that I use regularly is the secondhand bookshops. In recent years I have made great acquisition from Päijänne Antikvariaatti in Jyväskylä, Finland and from Kampintorin Antikvariaatti in Helsinki, Finland.

I think that collecting movies also interferes with my book shopping. It's hard to keep up two collections when you only have so much space in the house.

i pretty much agree w/ the both the takes that you and toohotty have on Alice in Sunderland. It IS a slow book, esp. for a graphic novel, to get through - it's very dense, in terms of information, and you really don't know how much of what you're reading is the author's fantasy/story as opposed to "fact." I rated it a bit higher, in part because I did keep coming back to it. On the other hand our son, who's both an Alice and graphic novel fan found it tedious..and i can understand that POV too..In the wrong mood, it would be very easy to get tired of Talbot's constant self-referencing, however self-deprecating.
I'm only 44 9/10 years old. I only SEEM like an old codger.

Yes, there are some fine folks in the SF group--Ian Sales is another name that comes to mind. Funny, smart and I've read some of his work and can tell you he's talented as hell too. Some guys have everything...

Good meeting you.
I, too, still seek the sense of wonder I was blessed with as a child...in everything I do. Writing, reading, watching films, playing a spirited game of hockey with my sons and (much younger and fitter) nephews.

We seem to know some of the same folks--arthurfrayn, jargoneer, etc.

Fine fellows.
