About meThe Library at the GLCC is now open and ready for business. The GLCC of Pittsburgh moved into it's new headquarters on Grant Street (3 blocks down the street from City Hall) at the end of August 2009.

To volunteer or to make a donation call (412) 422-0114.

We have about 8,500 books, DVDs, CDs and other materials in our collection. Almost all of them circulate for free.

About my libraryMany of the books in the GLCC Library are also available in the University of Pittsburgh Library or in one of the branches of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. We have begun to identify the books held by these libraries. If the collections column in the catalog says "Your Library" we own it at the GLCC. The collections column will also indicate items owned by the other libraries. If "0 local" appears in the comments column, it means that the U of Pitt and the Carnegie Library do NOT own the book. The book may be available (owned) at another area library. Check OCLC WorldCat for a more complete list of libraries holding a specific title.

We're always looking for donations of books and other items with GLBT interest. We'll add new/unique things to the collection and put duplicates in our used book sale.

It was really nice meeting you too even in the midst of Chaos. Settling in is moving along. The books are on the shelves and I'm ready to start stting up the archives area. Of course nothing goes as planned. The 2nd week we were there the storage area for unpacked boxes had water issues. All things considered we got off lucky. Only a half dozen books were damaged beyond saving along with a handful of magazines and newspapers. Fortunately the newspapers were regional, not local, but of course most of those books lost were the coffee table photography books. Let me know about your trip in June. I'm sure I can arrange a meeting there during your visit even if its' not on a weekend. You can have your pick of anything on my extra copies. Do you have Christopher Street?
Oh, I wish...maybe next year, I don't have the time/money for a trip to LA that soon. But thanks for the heads up; I'll be keeping an eye out for info on this one and next year's!
The move is scheduled to begin at 10 am. Indy pride is handling the details- size of truck etc. as well as providing volunteer movers so I'll be someplace between the two locations all day. If you come to the 439 E. Vermont address the library is located on the lower floor so come around the main front staircase and down to the entrance below it. Look forward to meeting you. Mike
Not a problem either way. Meeting a later time would certainly let me show my 'baby' off at it's best, but would be a pleasure to meet another book-person anytime. Mike
The big move is scheduled for this coming Sat the 26th. Not sure what time its starting but by this friday everything will be in boxes ready to go. I will be at the new location (439 E. Vermont) on Sat after the move til @ 7 pm. starting to arrange shelving and beginning to unpack. Not much to see as far as the library is concerned but if dropping by in the early evening fits into your schedule It would be a pleasure to meet you. Mike
Dan. Always interested in meeting other glbt collectors. Indy Pride, the sponsor who pays the rent on the space the library occupies has found cheaper digs. By the first of March we are to be relocated to 439 E. Vermont. Still in the downtown Indy area>Our hours will still be noon til 6 sat & sun.
I have a copy of Fun Home that I can send you. However, I got it through Bookcrossing.com, so it has a small BC label on the spine and a larger label on the inside front cover, as well as a couple of BC stamps. If that's okay, let me know and I'll send it off to you. I think I also have a copy of Brian Bouldrey's Monster floating around somewhere that I can send you as well.
Dan, We don't have a complaints about the erotica from our patrons- in fact that with the videos(porn) It's our most circulating division. But we've had some donations of early porn books- the 60's and 70's before the huge blowup about 'kiddie porn"I don't know that we have any- but I don't know that we don't. Without reading it all- some of the titles are a little suspect. Since I didn't feel I could include all of it in the lt data I chose to inclue none of it. I'm certainly not throwing it away- I just decided that it might be better if we didn't advertise to anybody that we included (gasp!) porn in the collection. Know what you mean about including video material on LT, Figure it out let me know. Mike
Dan. I've been with the library since its' inception. My personal collection was the nucleus of the library and it's still my pet project. Rare books- We have a reserved shelf of material which can only be used in the library and a policy that new patrons can borrow our only copy of a book by leaving a $20. cash deposit- refunded when they return it.( Since I have no budget to replace things I keep up to 2 copies of any one title)I'm still learning about using LT- the site was created by an intern at IUPUI library science dept and I think she ran out of time- I've spent weeks! going back thru the site to organize it in collections- only half way thru. Made the decision not to post the erotica on Lt( this is Indiana)what's your policy ? Mike
Hello. The Chris Gonzalez Library used to be affiliated with Diversity- The GLBT community center here in Indy. They have since dissolved but there used to be a midwest association of community centers t which held meetingsof reps from different citys. I know I attended one in Columbus Oh to which I took a lorge box of duplicates to share with other libraries. This was 6/7 years ago so I don't remember if Pittsburg was represented there then. While we have a growing collection( which I am still updating on LT) we operate with no budget depending on donations and volunteers. Indy Pride- which organizes the gay pride celebration here in Indy each year currently provides us operating space. Keep in touch. Mike B,
Hi Dan,

I sent out the books last week. You should have received them by now.

Julio
The Stonewall Center is located at the University if Massachusetts in Amherst. I'm a library student who is volunteering to catalog the collection via LibraryThing. This profile is very much a work in progress, and I'm aiming to get it up-to-date by the end of January. --David
I see that your MCC collection is now 18 titles. I have pulled 17 of them. Apparently one of my boxes lost its label because I cannot find the box that contains Man's Body: An Owner's Manual. I can send the 17 books I have now. Just, let me know where to send them.

Julio
I have a huge event happening this weekend plus visiting parents-in-law but next week I'll get back to working on the library.

Julio
I will be happy to contact ONE Institute.
Sorry, won't be able to make the cataloging this Sat (we're doing a drywall repair event at our new house - complete with volunteers; I hope it goes well for you (and I hope I'll be able to help out in the future). I'll get the Happy Lesbian book in the mail Sat or Mon.
I’ll be pulling out the books you’re interested in over the next couple of weeks. The books being weeded out have been put in crates and placed in a storage room. I’ll have to go back and sort them out according to their final destination. But I haven’t forgotten about you.

Julio
Thank you for creating the group!

We do copy cataloging 90% of the time. For those items not in WorldCat, we recruit some cataloging students from the local library school in for a cat & class party. We have a few library professionals volunteer & we rely on their advice ALOT!

I am in the process of weeding through the collection and removing volumes where we have multiple copies. Last year we received a sizeable donation of novels by lesbian authors from a couple that used to collect them and for some titles they had several copies. We also have multiple copies of books that were popular in their time and we have received the same donation from various people. So, the short answer is yes. We have already donated some to the PFLAG library in Richmond.

We don’t have a budget so we’d have to work out shipping. Take a look at the list and see what interests you and we’ll se what we can work out.

Julio
Thanks! I've joined a few of the GLBT groups... I wish I was seeing more activity.. however,
it seems everone is busy these days. It appears that good things are happening with your library.
How exciting to be moving into new digs.
I house our PFLAG Chapter's library at my house. I now need more bookshelves.
I also wish I could interest our membership in reading more books...
Do you have a blog or any special way that you try to promote your collection?

GLCC –

I saw your new group GLBT Libraries, and thought I'd mention that there are scads of other groups flourishing here at LT that you would probably be interested in, and at least 11 others specifically GLB or T.

I know it is really hard to find things with the way the group search works. So you may not have been able to find them when you performed your search in the step before creating a new group.

What I have found that works best is: click the Groups tab, then go to the ~Complete groups list~ at the top right, then use your browser's ~find on this page~ function {my browser has it in the edit tab} to search for a specific interest. (Give my version of group search a try; search for your favorite authors, age groups, areas of the country, hobbies, schools - there are a bajillion interesting groups.) Searching that way, using the search term “GLBT", etc., yielded these other groups you may want to check out.

I hate to see a new member languishing with no one to talk with, when in reality, ~Groups~ is just brimming with folks in identical conversations. The current system just makes it so hard to find them. I have my fingers crossed for a future application to make that easier: group tags! Meantime, hope you enjoy LT!
