About meI am author of THE SEARCHERS: THE MAKING OF AN AMERICAN LEGEND, which is about the historical roots and making of John Ford's classic Western movie, starring John Wayne. In real life I am director of the School of Journalism and G.B. Dealey Regents Professor at the University of Texas at Austin. I spent 27 years as a Washington Post reporter, editor and foreign correspondent, and served as bureau chief in Southern Africa, London and Jerusalem, where I won the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting for “sensitive and balanced coverage” of Israel and the Palestinian uprising. I am also the author of books on Israel and the apartheid era in South Africa. I came to UT Austin in 2010 after four years as a visiting professor of journalism at Stanford University.

About my libraryI've got a wide and varied collection of books reflecting the various areas I've worked in---including apartheid-era South Africa, Israel, the American West, film and pop music from the British invasion era. Plus the standard library of non-fiction public affairs and history books.
