Hi Heathcliff!
It's been some time since I heard from you. Just wanted to say hello. What have you been reading lately? I'm looking for some suggestions. I have not been all that excited about my most recent choices.

Hi Michael

I have read "Catcher in the Rye" a few times but not recently. I just love Holden's adolescent angst, trying to make sense of the world and his interactions with 'phonies'. I enjoy books with an adolescent protagonist..all that soul searching who am I? where do I fit in? Maybe I'm still asking those questions in a way..even at the ripe old age of 39!
How did you find it?

I probably wouldn't even remember what I read if I 'raced' through "A Suitable Boy". *giggle giggle* Whenever I'm through reading a book and I scan my shelves, I take it down... and then put it back. I'm in instant gratification mode with my reading right now. As soon as I can set my mind for a long-haul reading, I'll give it a go. :-) Are you really starting it now?

Yeah, no...I read 'Catcher' years ago. To tell you the truth I didn't "get it" at the time. I guess people really like the decoding aspect of the book--you know...all the reading between the lines stuff. I like my literature subtle, but not opaque. : ) I hope you enjoy reading it!

Hi, there, Michael!

I received your first "comment" when you returned, and I really did answer you (see above). I am absolutely dying to hear about your trip to the Pantanal. Did you go to Rio? I can't remember if that was on your itinerary or not. If so, you're lucky to be out of there because they are having an epidemic of dengue right now, and it's a bad one--the hospitals are full.

Second in the Espinosa series is December Heat.

I'm working away here on the farm and reading late afternoons and night time. Right now I'm reading Murder on a Kibbutz by an Israeli author, more Steinbeck, The Able McGlaughlins (US Pulitzer Prize winner in the late 20s), and The painter of Battles by one of my all-time favorite authors, Arrturo Perez-Reverte, a Spaniard. Plus working on a blog and trying to keep up with taking photos around here. A little exhausting!

Might be easier and somewhat surer if we used email. Mine is jlagow@gmail.com. Or, you can have LT notify you when a comment comes through--check your profile page.

Especially if you're going to send me any kind of a trip report--and I certainly hope that you can find the time--email might be better.

Hi, Michael,

Glad to hear you're back. How was the Pantanal? What birds did you see? I have my heart set on seeing the tui-tui before I die!! :-) although I understand from Panamanian friends that they exist here in Panama, too.

Also glad to hear that you enjoyed Silence of the Rain. Next one in the series is December Heat. The books keep getting better.

Do give me a run-down on your trip when you have a chance.

Hey there Heathcliff! When you complete your trip in Brazil let me know all about it. I've been to lots of places in Central America but I've never been down into S. America. I just got married in December in Costa Rica but we debated for a bit and almost went to Peru. So, I'm really intersted in that part of the world.

Well, I chicken out on Jane Austen. You know it's much more difficult to read the classics and I did not feel up to it. So, I gave in to a work of modern, British, fiction, "Case Studies" by: Kate Atkinson. It's brainless and just fun to read. But I will get back to the classics soon. What do you plan to read after you are done w/ Brazil?

Just wanted to welcome you to Librarything. I found your page after doing a search for "Wuthering Heights." Like you, I had never read it before and just recently picked it up. I'm not that far into it and I must admit that I forced myself to read a "classic." But it is cool! I think I want to pick up Jane Austen next, what about you?

This is a wonderful Web site. I have picked up more new authors and learned about--and read --more new books than I have in 10 years! In fact, it pleases me no end that someone else now knows about Garcia-Roza through me here on LibraryThing because LT is where I first heard about him--I had never heard about this series before that.

Hi, Michael!

I am absolutely without question the worst person in the world to answer that question because I LOVE reading books in order in a series and spend a lot of time figuring out which is the first so I can get them in order. But that's my quirk!

I think you get the best view of the character of Espinosa from the first book (plus a really good look at the neighborhood of Copacabana). But then you could easily skip to the 4th. Both the problem and the really good thing about the series is that each book takes a sort of different approach and the 5th book does NOT center around Espinosa himself. He plays a crucial part, but he is not the central character as he is in the others.

So--depends on what you want. I would recommend #s1,4, & 5.
