About meThe Holden Reading Room contains more than 4,000 volumes donated by Dr. Matthew Holden, Jr., the Henry L. and Grace Doherty Professor Emeritus of the University of Virginia and Mrs. Dorothy Holden. Professor Holden, a native of Mississippi, has served as president of the American Political Science Association, has authored or co-authored more than 30 books and articles and has served as the commissioner of the Federal Regulatory Commission. The Holden Reading Room is part of the Jackson State University Center for University Scholars.

About my libraryThe underlying theme in Holden's personal library was the nature and role of power in politics. The strengths of the collection are in African-American politics, regulatory policy, sociology of race, presidential politics, African history and British history. Additionally, the reading room offers a multimedia monitor for video and computer presentations. The reading room can be reserved for seminars, colloquia and the presentation of working papers. Faculty and graduate students are welcome to read in the Center. To reserve the room, please e-mail the Center at the address on this page. The Holden Reading Room is located in Room 3 of Johnson Hall on the main campus of Jackson State University.

STATUS: Currently, about a quarter of the volumes do not have Library of Congress of Catalog numbers either in the database or on the book. We are labeling those books and adding the existing Library of Congress catalog numbers to the database, where applicable. (16 July 2007)

Holden's collection is great. Thank you for putting this on Library Thing. Are you planning to upload covers? Did Holden have his own taxonomy that you could add as tags? Is the room open to the public or only to students of the university?
It's pretty great you are putting this collection on LibraryThing, and it looks to be a fascinating set of books. It's also got odd similarities to my own library, just up the road in Oxford! I'm curious how many other books we'll have in common once I get the other half or so of mine in....
This is a collection that was donated to the center by Prof. Matthew Holden. I'm not sure why he had that book in his collection. However, he did have a fairly extensive collection of works dealing with South Africa.
Hye, why do you have that Rivonia book?
Is your "The life and times" The life and times of Bertrand Russell or Einstein : the life and times?
