About meI'm a slightly-encrusted academic library assistant. Previous forms of wage-labour have included: Probation hostel warden, engineering machine operator/quality control inspector (first 15 years of my working life, it was hell!), and canal restoration (in the bleakest of bleak midwinters).
I left Probation work in 1995 to come to University, studying English Lit, Politics and the History of Science. I began a Masters in 2000, but didn't complete it. I'm planning to return to part time study at some point in the next 3-5 years, purely out of intellectual curiosity, probably concentrating on local history (16th Century/English Reformation).

Financial perturbations over the decades have resulted in me having to dispose of quantities of books periodically, but things are fairly stable now, and I'm restoring much of what was necessarily discarded, as well as adding more new stuff to my already-overstuffed shelves.
As well as books, I enthuse about classical music, the Baroque and Opera, popular songwriters, especially Richard Thompson, Robyn Hitchcock, Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, to name but a few, Progressive/Hard Rock, and the more obtuse end of the rock spectrum, e.g. Beefheart, Zappa, King Crimson, et al.
I like cinema, and quality TV drama, theatre, but can't abide dance of any kind. I enjoy cricket, even when England lose (it's the contest not the outcome that matters!), and football (that's soccer to our North American cousins), and I've been a keen runner, on and off, for 20 years, but have no interest in doing it competitively. I like my own company, and I've been contendedly unaccompanied since 2001, and plan to stay that way, and I'm a guy who likes to wear skirts.

About my libraryFiction, both novels and short stories, poetry, history, music, popular science, humour, reference.
