About me My name is Jessica Orr and I’m a bibliophile. They say admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery but I don’t think it helps when you’re addicted to books. At least, I’ve conceded to being an addict for most of my life and I’m still a bibliophile. Despite my addiction, I’m still able to function in normal society. But then maybe I’m not addicted so much as in love. There’s a difference between being a bibliophile and a bibliomaniac. Bibliomania is a brand of obsessive compulsive disorder whereas Bibliophilia is an extreme hobby. Really it’s like comparing a raging alcoholic to a Saturday drunk. It’s all a matter of degrees.
I live in the Midwest with my husband, our one year old daughter, collection of books and 13 assorted chickens. Apart from reading, I like to garden, hike, paint, crochet and draw. And I write- as you can tell, because I'm writing right now. Isn't the written word amazing?
I'm somewhat of a hippie, but an academic background in biology gives me grounding in reality. That is to say, I understand that the natural world isn't perfectly harmonious. Each creature strives for the largest share of resources- mice, oaks, sparrows and people are all equally selfish. It is the finely evolved *interrelations* between species and individuals that prevents things from going haywire. This continual push and shove between opposing desires creates the illusion of harmony and is, I think, the prefect example of the yin-yang philosophy.
Latest News: There's a library book sale tomorrow. My husband called me a "book nutter" after I gushed about being able to buy eighty paperbacks for only twenty dollars. But, in my defense (as if I need to defend myself on LT), they do have a really great selection at this particular sale...
About my library My library is an eclectic mix of fiction and nonfiction, with the later predominating. Most of my books are acquired from library sales which I anticipate with the same childish glee normally reserved for Christmas.
I collect old science books, writing guides, books about books and fiction with interesting cover art.
My current big fetish are books about Gilded Age Chicago, including the 1893 Chicago World's Columbian Exposition. More generally, I also love books about America in the late Victorian period- it's material culture, etiquette, family life and so forth.
I also love cooking and cookbook collecting. I have far more recipes on my bookshelf than I can ever attempt.
Really, I just can't resist a book -period-
