dennphill with a little follow-up 27 Dec 09...
Christmas 2009, and on a intimate family cruise to the Southern Caribbean, what does "Dennis' Wonderful Sister" present him (among other presents) but a copy of PWA. (I was wrong below, she apparently also remembers it.) Book's a little ratty and dog-eared...but...LOOKS just(!) like it could have been the actual copy I had in the 50s!!! Truly a treasure (and I don't want to even GUESS what she paid for it!)...and reading it did bring back memories. Again, IF I ever do see another copy browsing antique stores or flea markets, I will try and notify you AnnaBlume and vdfukawi (you a member of the tribe of tiny little people that keep walking in circles in the tall grass asking "vere da f*** are we"?)...anyway, "THANKS, Sis!" And...an afterthought...why hasn't any publisher considered a re-print? Even after all these years, on re-read and a pretty objective look at it, I'd say it carries a good moral tone and might be well received even in this age...but then again, maybe LWP87 and we three (and my sister) are the only PWA fans. Regards to any other PWA fans out there. :-)
Hiya! Just a guy that occasionally goes through antique stores with his wife and friends, and recently spent some time (not much to be honest) glancing through old childrens books since I, too, about 50 years ago had a copy of Peter's Wonderful Adventure that I read and re-read and re-read. I don't know where my parents got it...some of the stuff that survived the years, my sister still has, but not that book. (She doesn't seem to remember it, though at two years younger, most of my stuff went though her hands, too.) I seem to remember the last time I was looking for a copy was when my son was just learning to read...time has a way of slipping away on us...he's 25 now, and graduated from university and working and living in Florida. Anyone know the author or anything about the book? Bet if I only put a little bit of effort into it, I could find a copy in an antique shop. If I do, I will post it...though I am not a "library-thinger". And, if I find two copies, I will notify you, AnnaBlume and vdfukawi. :-)
While fewer than fifty years have passed for me, the book was passed down originally from my grandmother to my mother and then to me. There was a period when it was the only book I kept under my bed and I reread it over and over again. I recall compelling illustrations. The moralizing aspect of the tale didn't phase me at all. I just loved the colors, the doors and the worlds Peter entered until his faults were no longer glaringly imprinted upon his forehead. This, by the way, seems to be the only reference to an out-of-print book online.
I read "Peter's Wonderful Adventure" about 50 years ago and it made quite an impression on me. I have been trying to locate a copy for several years now with no success, until I read your entry for that book on Library Thing. Could you help me obtain a copy in any way?
