About meMy Great Grandmother gave me my first book when I was three years old -- and I still have it. I hauled boxes of books around with me on every move I ever made (my ex-husband said the good thing about divorce was never having to move my books again). Whatever real experience life has presented me, I discovered it first through a book.
About my libraryI inherited an old collection of books when I was young, so my library has some neat and unique books, including quite a few on poetry. A couple of years of membership in the Library of America gave me a collection of American classics. I like beautifully written fiction, historical fiction, biography, political theory, Russian literature, southern fiction, British mystery, books about India and books about American democracy. I have quite a few cookbooks. As I catalogued my library I missed books that I've loved but do not own, as well as those I've loaned that did not return home (The History of Political Philosophy, A Year in Provence and the Complete Sherlock Holmes are missed the most -- scofflaws, you know who you are!) A few years ago I decided to purge books that were just hanging around on my bookshelves, and got rid of nearly everything that I didn't love for one reason or another. I've kept up the practice, so most of what I have, I like. (The Story of Edward Sawtelle, for example, was in the thrift shop book bin faster than you could say "dreadful waste of ink.")
