About meMy website: www.RethinkingTeaching.com

Dr. Leah van Belle is an Associate Professor in the College of Education at Madonna University in Livonia, MI, where she has redesigned teacher education courses to emphasize authentic, field-based teacher training. She teaches her graduate and undergraduate classes in Detroit schools, with teachers as partners in new teacher education. Her courses engage novice and experienced teachers in service-learning projects that serve urban schools and families through after-school programs, such as a magazine club and a free reading clinic.

As a servant leader in urban education, Dr. van Belle collaborates with preK-12 schools. In this role she uses a coaching model to lead professional development for instructional coaches and teachers, with emphasis on evidence-based best practices in teaching and learning, curriculum mapping and unit design using a backward design (UbD) framework, culturally-relevant pedagogy, and collaborative inquiry into practice to develop a professional learning community that supports teachers' growth. She supports principals and district leaders in growing instructional rigor preK-12. As a first-generation high school and college graduate, she is deeply committed to supporting teachers in closing the academic opportunity and achievement gap through excellence in teaching and learning. She believes that education is one of the most powerful tools for social justice.

Her community work includes collaboration with adult literacy programs in Detroit and she is a consultant with the Michigan Department of Education. She serves as the editor of the Michigan Reading Journal, the peer-reviewed journal of the Michigan Reading Association, with a circulation of more than 6,500 readers.

Dr. van Belle earned her doctorate in Educational Studies from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, with her research focused on teachers’ professional choices in the implementation of reading programs, literacy coaches’ work with classroom teachers, literacy practices in bilingual communities, and classist and racist discourses in curriculum materials.
