(The photo is of Nabokov; I look much younger!) We've all had the bewildered looks and comments because we (shock! horror!) read. I usually respond by admitting that it is solitary, I know, but I do put books down and enjoy speaking to human beings, too. In fact, I can often be found spending many sun-soaked hours on my yacht, laughing gaily at the humorous prose of my favourite authors and tossing the book into the harbour with reckless abandon if I believe the person yelling at me to put some clothes on might, in fact, be a good conversationalist. News from me: I liked Lolita, perhaps not as much as you, but I appreciated the style and the humouristic choice of words. (I probably missed a lot because I do not master English well enough.) My favourite quotation is ... Valeria, as she waddled by my side, began to shake her poodle head vigorously without saying a word. I let her go on for a while and then asked if she thought she had something inside. (Chapter 8).
But: I'm completely puzzled by House Mother Normal! I simply couldn't go farther than page 3 (I can't understand what it is about, although I understand each sentence)... And decided I would stop and ask you how to read it properly. Should one try to read the different chapters at the same time? Or would it help if I read the last chapter first?
Take your time for your reply. There is no hurry. I'm in a spy book now for a change.
Best wishes.

I bought Lolita last month in a shop in downtown Grenoble, and I ordered House Mother Normal from amazon yesterday (Johnson seems to be completely absent from bookshops here, whether in English or French). Finally, you should be proud of my following two of your recommendations! Now I still have to read the books. I'm still struggling with the Boswell's Life of Johnson; I'm almost at the end; I'm terribly slow... Lolita will be a change.
Best wishes,
François

I think you will love Perec. You have also arisen my interest in Johnson. I didn't know him, although I knew that there were such books as the second you described. I feel his way of writing is similar to Perec's. I keep his name in mind for the future. Maybe for my next holidays in Corsica.
& about Nabokov? Would Lolita be your Castaways' Choice? I never read it. What makes it so special? You should contribute a few lines on it in the FS Devotees group!
