About meI'm a children's librarian and a graduate of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. I've also worked in museums, particularly in museum education.
Given my professional interests, it's probably not surprising that my hobbies consist mostly of collecting and organizing things. Lots of things. Some of the things I collect include old toys; vintage holiday stuff; old fortune-telling paraphenalia; snowglobes and other kitschy travel souvenirs; and, of course, books. (I've recently started a little blog for my collections at tracystoys.blogspot.com.)
I tend toward reclusiveness, mostly just staying at home with my collections, but I do venture out to acquire new additions for them at antique shows and such. And I love traveling to tacky roadside tourist attractions. These excursions mostly involve only myself, since my family and friends loathe such places, but on the up side, there's no one to sigh and look tellingly at their watches while I peruse shelves full of cedar trinket boxes, plastic snowdomes, Paul Bunyan statues, and assorted other tourist tchotkes ...
About my libraryI have a large collection of children's titles, and also old books (I love the way they smell, don't you?) I read mostly non-fiction: sciences, history, and fortean. After a recent trip to a miniature book fair, I've become interested in miniature and handmade books too.
My favorite part of my home library, though, is its "Weird Books" section. I absolutely adore odd, unusual, or eccentric books. I thought I was alone in this until Donna Kossy's "Book Happy" zine came out, a review journal devoted entirely to incredibly strange books. It was good to discover I was not so weird after all, or, if I was, that at least there were others like me.
