About me After more than a decade at a large not-for-profit educational testing company, I recently completed a master's degree in library and information science. I now manage the library and records management program for an architectural and engineering firm. My partner and I have been together for nearly seven years and we have a beloved cat named Lilibet.

About my library Like most people, my library reflects my life and interests. My undergraduate degree is in Political Science, so you will find a lot of books about elections and politics. I have a passion for royal families, the British peerage, European nobility, and prominent American families--all of these subjects are well represented. I also have a lifelong interest in classical and European history.

I have a weakness for maps and genealogical tables in books. A book that has one or both may be in my library even if it has no other redeeming feature. I have been known to buy a book simply for these assets.

I enjoy mysteries, science fiction, fantasy, and the novels of Anthony Trollope.

Probably the fastest growing part of my collection is gay-themed works. As an out and proud gay man, this is an essential aspect of my library and life today.

I enjoy books in series, so once I find an author that I like, I often acquire all of his or her works.

Hey,

I've read 3 things by Jay Quinn. Back Where He Started was okay. It's a "broken marriage" / love story. I liked his new book better. It's called The Beloved Son. It's not as gay as his others. It's about a middle aged son caring for his aging parents.

Read both after you finish Selfish and Perverse and let me know what you think.

Dan
Hi Matthew,

I just finished reading "Selfish and Perverse" by Bob Smith. I noticed you have it in your collection. Have you read it yet? It was laugh out loud funny. I just finished it while on vacation. It's a great beach read. Full of sex, drugs and salmon fishing in Alaska. It's one of the few books I've ever read that made me want to go to Alaska.

Dan

PS

Hope the new job is going well.
Excuse this intrusion, but I thought you might like to be made aware of the new E.F.Benson group. Please join - the more the merrier!
I just noticed you changed your profile. Glad to see you've finished your degree and found a job. Congratulations! It's all the more reason you should come to ALA now you have an employer who should be paying your expenses to attend professional meetings.

I'm recently out (3 years) and agree with your comments about being gay effecting your collecting and reading habits. I travel alot for work and pleasure and almost feel obligated to visit, support and buy from gay book stores. I always buy something from Giovanni's Bookstore in Philadelphia and Lambda Rising in DC when I'm there. You can trace my travels by looking at the comments section in my catalog. Traveling is one big advantage of my job. This summer I was in Paris on my way to Johannesburg and went to Les Mots a la Bouche in the Marais. It's a great gay bookstore.

Good luck in your new job, Take care.

Dan
Hi Matthew!

Thanks for accepting my invite! I see we share a lot of the same taste in books. I hope you'll check mine out some day. I think you'd enjoy them.

Take care and have a great holiday season, whichever holiday(s) you celebrate.
A man who likes Norwich and Runciman, my kind of guy! I need to peruse your collection in more depth. I'm sure I'll find a book or two to add to the to-buy list.
I am very impressed with (read envious of) your library. Thanks for tagging me. I see have many titles in common and not just a complete list of Agatha Christies that artificially inflates the count. I have never known anyone who personally owned Debrett's or Almanac de Gotha.
Wow -- reviews of both Mahu and The Almanac of American Politics - never thought I'd run across other folks who've read both!
