About meOpisthokont; Gnoscophile; Photographer. Also reader, writer, worrier, near Olympic-standard procrastinator. Brain-drained from botany to medical research to publishing, now IT. City-living Australian who's explored some outback & roundabout, as well as a small sample of Europe. Assorted problems have crimped my style recently, but I still like reading about both inner & outer worlds more than most other things.
About my libraryA sprawling mix of old, new, fact, fiction, beauty, & utility, reflecting the broad-spreading, highly interlinked & dense-packed contents of my mind, as they once were.
At least 3000 books spread across at least 3 sites, and, like my life, in a bit of a mess now. As things (as I hope) improve, I want to put books in here as part of the clearing & organizing of stuff - 'gomi' in William Gibson.

Good to hear from you again, and to see our common list expand, esp with the Barry Hughart collection, I've loved those for so many years.
All is quite well down here - I had a breif trip to Sweden for work and loved it. We spent the weekend in Sydney after I got back so that my littlest warband could skate at the Sydney Winter festival. She even got to do a solo performance.
Now its back to work, and we are busier than the proverbial Bagdhad Bricklayers.
I hope that all is going well with you, it is good to see some changes to your recent activity list
Keep Well

another Australian History you might like - Stephen Dando Collins "Bligh's Other Mutiny" about the Rum Rebellion. I gave it to my father for his birthday and he is raving about it. I have had two scores with him recently - Fathers day I gave him 'Shoot Straight You Bastards' which he also liked and now this one.

My attitude to books is that I snatch every chance to read - so at least in the short term whilst I have some disposable income, I'm grabbing a few extras. I love the fact that in the heart of Canberra's winter I can keep a paperback in my jacket pocket and crash through a few pages whenever there is a lull.
My father had Tuchman reccommended to him by a family friend (who was an academic of some sort within an order of preists) and he read 'August 1914', then 'The Proud Tower' before getting hold of 'A Distant Mirror'. He ran a carpark at that time so had plenty of reading time, I used to work there after school and that is when I read it first.
Over the years we stocked Dad up with most of Tuchman's work - 'Sand Against The Wind', 'Bible and Sword', 'The March of Folly' - I have two of these with me now and plan to re-read Folly soon.
For something quirky on Australian History you should check out 'Shoot Straight You Bastards' by Nick Blezinski (might not be spelt right but this is in my catalogue). It is a very interesting re-analysis of the Breaker Morant case. I bougth it at a second hand store some years ago, but it has recently resurfaced (I saw copies in both Dymocks and QBD here in Canberra).

I just added The Battle of Brisbane to my catalouge and thought I'd check out who else has the book here on LT.
I thought the mix of books that we have in common is most interesting - "A Distant Mirror" one of the best medieval histories I've ever read (I read it first in my teens), two alternative histories with magic thrown in and of course "Battle of Brisbane".
Bizarre.
