About meWhen I was sixteen I had written three books and two movies; it then took me five years to realize I wanted to be a writer. My first book is a memoir of my time in Iraq, it is titled: Mass Casualties: A Young Medic's True Story of Death, Deception, and Dishonor in Iraq.
The memoir is neither pro-war nor anti-war, it is merely what happened. Many other books try to 'glorify' or 'horrify' the situation; I simply wanted to tell a true war story.
When I joined the Army I was seventeen and needed my parents permission. At first they were hesitant, but then the recruiter took out a plethora of free t-shirts, coffee mugs, bumper stickers, and pens; it was then I realized: my parents weren't hesitant about signing me up because of the war, they were simply negotiating. My parents were pros, they had done this five times before, they knew to wait for the good stuff.
I have four older brothers and two older sisters. My four brothers joined: 2 Air Force, 1 Army, 1 Marine. My two sisters: 1 joined Air Force, and one is in school to be a teacher.
I left for basic (ten weeks) then AIT to become an Operating Room Technician(five months), came home, when to school for a year, then got deployed for eight-teen months (twelve months in Iraq). Somewhere in that mess, I manged to help deliver a few babies, save a few hundred lives, do a few drugs, dodge hundreds of mortars and come close to jail. After my deployment, I came home, went to school, wrote a book, and got a book deal-- at that point I was twenty-two.
