About my libraryIntroduction:
Provisions is an arts and social change learning resource that amplifies compelling voices that challenge and redefine the mainstream. Its library and online services are a trusted source for alternative perspectives on a wide range of social change topics and its innovative exhibitions strongly engage the arts as a powerful means of exploring social issues and as an agent of change. The Library features on-site programs such as exhibitions, screenings, workshops as well as fully-accessible online study guides, virtual exhibitions and up-to-date information through its blog Signal Fire and e-newsletter Critical Dispatches.

Grounded in the values of peace, justice, sustainability, social responsibility and respect for the diversity of life, since its founding in 2001 Provisions has grown in purpose, scope and audience to become a valued cultural institution for exploring and inspiring new avenues of creative social change. It is an independent, non-profit organization with a professional staff and international board of directors committed to diversifying Provisions' impact as well as its sources of support.

Provisions is now investigating new and effective ways of amplifying compelling voices of social change that extend beyond Provisions' physical and virtual space to intervene in mainstream culture and offer positive visions for social change.

History:
Provisions Learning Project was initiated by Gaea Foundation to find effective ways to nurture creative individuals engaged in radical social change. This process led to the opening of a resource center for activism and arts in September, 2001, as an experimental outpost where the public could have access to alternative publications from around the world. Also initiated at that time was Sea Change Residencies, a project in Provincetown Massachusetts providing time and space for artists and activists to further their work. In 2002, the center began to present exhibitions of socially-engaged art and offer educational programs and workshops to the public. In 2006 a new website was launched enabling greater access to collections and programs. Provisions is now an independent non-profit organization building new funding partnerships that will sustain the organization beyond the generous support Gaea Foundation.

Provisions was selected as an exemplary non-profit organization by the Catalogue for Philanthopy.

Collection:
Provisions’ collection offers a unique context to study social change subject areas and topics not easily found in mainstream bookstores, public libraries or the Internet. It is international in scope and perspective, diverse in its voices, and balanced in its commitment to illuminating movements, experiences and struggles for social change. The collection supports the idea that social change is a broad-based endeavor best served by a wholistic and inclusive approach. The value of Provisions' collection lies also in its attentiveness to the intersections between arts and social change, where inspirations for future social models are emerging. The collection is a critical resource for Provisions' ongoing exhibitions, educational and research programs. The inclusion of books, articles and other research materials in exhibitions is a hallmark of Provisions' curatorial strategy.
