About me"Two things will affect you most in the next ten years: the people you meet and the books you read" - Howard Hendricks (Dallas Seminary)

Not much to say about me. Christian, husband, father, employee, reader, teacher, drummer, computergeek, sinner. I love to read. I used to hate it. When God rescued me from my sin the first and most obvious change was a love for reading. The Scriptures first, then books that help me understand the Scriptures second. After that, I'm interested in military works being a veteran myself. I also enjoy reading stories that I read or were read to me as a child. I try to give books away to fight off the temptation to love them too much. Besides, it's fun to forget about the ones you've given away and when you remember them you can add them to LibraryThing!

About my libraryMany of my books were given to me by a former Pastor. I try to only buy when I'm done reading what I have. This isn't going very well. Anyone else struggle with that? I'm not talking about reading reference works cover to cover, I understand those are long term investments.
Anyway, glad to be on here and link up with others, see what everyone's reading and add my thoughts to the discussion.

Hello R.I.F.

Not sure how to link but PRTS is offering a free course on Theology Proper #412. If you go to http://www.puritanseinary.org/2009/09/fr... you should be able to find if interested. Course is taught by Joel Beeke.
Hello R.I.F.

No I had these books for maybe two months the problem was when I entered the ISBD # it would not list anything. But finnaly it worked yesterday. This set is the 500 year edition for his birthday and it cost was $119 plus shipping. Also received His Institutes translated by Beveridge in one volume.

I'm a little dissapointed though that he was not able to do all the books of the Bible. Conserding what he did do in his ministry, life, and for his time he was the Greatest. If the Lord does not return in another 500 years people will still be reading Calvin along side their Bibles.

I agree with you statment about Calvin. I think the one's who hate him are the one's who have never read him, at least that is what I find. To me he is so warm and caring for peoples souls. But I guess it depends on your out look of God being Soverign or Man being Soverign. As I tell them if Man is Soverign then you will not like Calvin.

God Bless.
Hello R.I.F.

Thanks for your comments going to O.T. right now to strengthen my left hand and elbow.

Regarding books I get them where ever I can. Try to get books on sale finances are not so great at this time. Some places CBD, CVBBS, Westminister Book Store, Ebay, BookFinders.com for out of print books also Abeused books.com, and I store by the name of Ollies. They carry books that are older but at great prices. Example I bought Wayne Grudem Systematic Theology for $8.00. Purchased I bunch of Mounces Greek and the most expensive was $9.00. Most of the books they carry are emergeant, or not Reformed but once in a while you find gems. The book Quiet Moments in Prayer by Lloyd John Ogilvie I paid $2.99. How can you go wrong. In fact quite a lot of the books I buy there are $3.99 and under. I bought a Giant Print KJV leather Bible for $2.99. So I try their first but when I find a Job and go to work I plan to purchase more Puritain Books.

As far as preaching I'm a deacon in my church and we preach one Sunday night a month. I enjoy preaching but the hard part is deciding what to preach. Some say preaching once a month is harder then doing it every Sunday. You can't get into a series or a regulair pattern.

Sorry so long but thanks for thinking about me and God Bless you and your family.
R.I.F. good to hear from you.

Just had surgery about two weeks ago on left elbow and wrist. Been in and out of emerengecy rooms with my wife and daughter. My pain medication messed up my eyes and have not really been reading.

Did get two new books Making a Difference in Preaching by Haddon Robinson. Reading this because I get to preach about every four weeks at church on Sunday night.

Then reading Quiet Moments in Prayer by Lloyd John Ogilvie who I have never heard of. Do you know anything about him. Book seems intersting but just started.

Also still trying to read a book How Firm A Foundation on Theonomy by Tim Cunningham which is not a book yet just his pre published manuscript. I do not know much about Theonomy so its taking me a while.
I see that you have some good books yourself and live in this wonderful state of Michigan. Happy Reading!!

Hope you had a very nice father's day with your family. Keep this time with your family precious for children grow so quickly.
No I'm not able to receive any training at this time. I'm supposed to find a job doing anything. The Buffalo area has nevered recovered from the recession's of 1973, 1975. But with the LORD'S help we will surive since we are depending on him. He will provide a job in due time. Or his time and not mine. Teaches one to wait on the LORD.

God Bless.
What do I do for a living? Good question I wonder myself. At this time I'm a useless eater if you know what I mean. At this time I collect workman's comp. I have not worked in over two years. Had a stuptid accident and had a complete rupture of right quadercept from knee. Also had to have surgery on right elbow and hand. Still waiting for surgery for left elbow and hand. Do not know what I will be able to do in future. I used to work as a Stationary Engineer (took care of large boilers and chillers). When hurt was working as a HVAC/R. Used to be head of Maintenance for a large Hotel. Only God knows what the future holds for me.

I feel for you with all those kids I love being a grandfather, I can always send the children home. Children are wonderful.

I'm a deacon in a Baptist church. Trying my best to follow the Bible but much to often I fail.

God Bless.
Dear R.I.F.: This is just to let you know that I found a copy of "Christians Are Forever" by John Owen, and it should be here in a week or two. Thank you for the recommendation. God bless. YangGuy
Dear R.I.F.: Thank you for your kind note! I will have to find a copy of Owen. I first heard of Bunyan when a distant relative gave me a copy of Pictorial Pilgrim's Progress, published by Moody in 1960. It was given to me in 1962 at the age of eight. I didn't know who Bunyan was at the time, but I re-read that book dozens of times. It has only been in the past couple years that I figured out that Abba Father used Christian, Bunyan who was behind him, and Christ who was behind him, to draw me to Jesus at that time. Your decision to not let your books become an idol is a real challenge to me. I will have to think through and pray about it, since I often refer back to books and cycle through them. My space is limited, so if I am going to add anything, I need to get rid of some. I keep intending to search the puritans for their teaching on the perseverance of the saints, so Owen will be a good start. Thank you. God bless you richly in Christ Jesus. "You are beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ ... keep yourself in the love of God." (Jude) YangGuy (Yang is the Chinese word for sheep ... check out an article online entitled, "The Lamb of God Hidden in the Ancient Chinese Characters" ... by Kui Shin Voo and Larry Hovee)
Dear R.I.F.: Thank you for your thoughts on Bunyan. I also have wondered about the apparent loss of salvation implied in the Interpreter's House. I cannot say with certainty, but I wonder if it is merely an illustration of what happens to one's assurance of salvation if one is not careful ... such as is spoken of in Hebrews 6: "... close to being cursed ..." As Peter said of Paul's writings, but I am thinking of all Scripture ... there are things hard to understand. God bless. YangGuy
Was wondering if you read Gagging of God by D.A. Carson? I have tried to read it twice now but it hurts my brain.

God bless.
Good morning;

I have not started Luke yet I started in John and keep stoping due to his treatment of the text. He provides so much information and his notes are extensive. Which leads to useful meditations to feast upon.

The problem with books, to many good books and not enough money to purchase them all. Which always reminds me of John 21:25 I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. So many books about Christ and they haven't even scratched the surface. Amazing.

God Bless.
R.I.F. welcome to LT.

I see you attend a Reformed Baptist Church. Have you ever checked out Founders the reformed churches of the Southern Baptist? They have good articles there. I see you have been blessed with four children and a lovely wife. What are their names? I attend a conservative baptist church in Buffalo NY. Happy to see you enjoy reading now. If I can be of any help let me know. If you would like to talk about any of the books we share let me know. I do not have a formal education just know what I do from what I read. Thank God for good books. I'm reading Expository Thoughts on the Gospels by J.C. Ryle.
