I too walk past the piles of Lost Symbol in the megastore with a sneer, but "vow" is too strong - if I'm stuck in a waiting room and it's RIGHT THERE yes, I'll start reading it. That's the power of marketing.
Read your review of The Da Vinci Code and totally agree with it. I actually listened to it as an audiobook, so my dismay at the flimsy plotting and two-dimensional characters was compounded by the audiobook reader's grating voice and persistent mispronunciation of ALL the French placenames.

I see you're also a Jane Austen fan. Now THAT's good writing.
