I saw you were asking about Willa Cather on Julia's thread. Mark is doing an American Author Challenge (AAC) for the whole year. Willa Cather is January and a lot of us chose Death Comes for the Archbishop.

Here is the link to the challenge http://www.librarything.com/topic/162960

The January Willa Cather thread is here http://www.librarything.com/topic/163440

The February Faulkner thread is here http://www.librarything.com/topic/164037#

You can do all the months or pick and choose and substitutions are ok.

Hi, Apologies for not seeing your question. It's been a long, tiring summer. Since the country boundaries were inflicted on the African tribes by the various colonial powers, I'm pretty sure any folktales would not respect such boundaries. I think the belief in some form or another is more far-reaching, though I'm not an expert. It does seem to be another form of the "familiar spirit" or "totem animal" belief (a quick look on the web suggests these beliefs existed in many indigenous peoples (Mayan, Inuit, Native American...) Does that help? Best, Lois
