Hi, Apologies for not seeing your question. It's been a long, tiring summer. Since the country boundaries were inflicted on the African tribes by the various colonial powers, I'm pretty sure any folktales would not respect such boundaries. I think the belief in some form or another is more far-reaching, though I'm not an expert. It does seem to be another form of the "familiar spirit" or "totem animal" belief (a quick look on the web suggests these beliefs existed in many indigenous peoples (Mayan, Inuit, Native American...)
