About meI'm a thirtysomething American East-coaster that has been transplanted to London and is successfully putting down roots here in the UK. In addition to reading (LOTS!), I love knitting, Pilates and yoga, running and various television series (Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica, anything by Joss Wheddon, Cold Feet, This Life, the Wire...you get the picture). (And since being credit crunched, I am having the opportunity to enjoy a lot more of these!)
I have a recently acquired husband (2 May 2009) and two cats that were born in a barn in France. We're a happy little family....
About my librarySadly, as the result of a recent home-combining exercise, most of my library is in storage! It will be about a year or so before I have it all in one place again, but I take this as an opportunity to buy more books! (I am just trying to imagine the herculean task of cataloguing all the books when they come out of storage....)
My reading is somewhat ecclectic. On the fiction side, "classics", literary and general fiction, science fiction/fantasy (from Harry Potter to Neal Stephenson), mysteries form the bulk of my collection, with the occasional chick lit or popular fiction (yes, I have read The DaVinci Code) thrown in for good measure. On the non-fiction side, I have lots of cookbooks (and books on food), knitting books, travel guides and history (including most of my texts from college), along with some religion, law and philosophy books.
How do I decide what to read next? Well, it's hard, isn't it.... I
Sometimes it's an organic process where I go into the office (or a bookstore) and stare at the bookshelves until something leaps out at me. Or sometimes, as I am working on one book, another keeps tickling at the back of my mind and I just know that's the next thing. Or (especially when I am on holiday and I finish the books that I brought), I just read whatever my husband has in is bag!

Thanks for your reply, nice to hear from you and have some input. I have always leaned towards Sci-Fi that stretches my understanding, as well as entertaining. Dealing as it does with semantics and thought systems among other topics, Anathem is a real mind - opener, and I can't wait to get to grips with the other works you have recommended. Again, thanks.
