About meI'm a new novelist, occasional poet, avid reader and lover of story. My first novel, Gemsigns, is out now in the UK and Commonwealth, and available everywhere online. My publisher Jo Fletcher Books (an imprint of Quercus) will soon be making an announcement concerning US distribution. Gemsigns is the first book of the ®Evolution trilogy; the second, Binary, will be released in 2014. I blog at Talking back to the night, mostly about writing, books and the strange and exciting business of publication, and I tweet as @scriptopus.

That moniker comes from another project: a while back I founded Scriptopus, an online interactive writing application. Scriptopus is a timed game of round robin storytelling, in which writers contribute short segments to an ongoing story. Participants can engage in as many stories as they like, start new ones, and share completed stories with friends. The catch is that each writer can only see what the previous one has written. Stories are selected at random. At once surreal and hilarious, a Scriptopus story is an exercise in catch-and-release inspiration.

About my libraryEclectic. There's a strong showing both from the literary classics canon, and from science fiction and fantasy. But this is only a subset of the books I currently own, and a tiny fraction of the books I've read - moving from country to country means some have inevitably been shed. I'm happier about the ones I no longer have because I loved them so much I had to give them away.
