re your question on "the gift of rain" - yes, endo and philip are definitely lovers. the clues are all there right from the feeding with chopstick scene (which is what gave the game away for me as this simply isn't done in asian culture). look at the titles of the books on the bookshelf. look at the sword fight scene.

why isn't it more explicit? there is a tendency to ghetto-ise gay books. and you have to remember that the author comes from an asian society which is a lot less permissive about homosexuality than the west.
