About my libraryI have varied tastes and will read more or less everything. I'm not too keen on romance or chick lit and I dislike mis lit. I love to read children's books as well. My librarything consists of books I/my daughter owns and books from the library.

I love the new boards, too, Tess. I wasn't ever happy being part of a newspaper scheme so am very pleased to be back with the Book People.
Aw thank you! That's lovely! Sam xx
That'd be lovely Tess but don't feel obliged or anything!!
Just been looking at 'Italian Folktales' by Calvino - looks interesting! Let me know what it's like. Sam x
Hi Tess, that's great. Emma is a movie I've seen but not a book I've read. Thanks
Michelle
Hi Tess,
I challenge you to read The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. I have this to read too!!
Michelle -x-
Hallo there,
Lovely to 'meet' you! I think I have a way to go before I get as many books in my library as you do. Unfortunately the years and several house moves have lead to a 'cull' some time ago but I am now working my way back up!
I did notice your library before and added it as an 'interesting' one. I noticed our similar taste, especially the variety in sci-fi, classics and the Coelho books which I have enjoyed.
I haven't got around to reading the JG Ballard books yet though.

Lovely dog by the way!
:)
Certainly do approve - thank you!

As you've chosen one of your favourites, I'll do the same. Not only one of my all-time favourite authors, but what I regard as possibly his best book:

A Month In The Country, by J.L.Carr

If you like it even half as much as did, you will love it. Hope so!
That's a great challenge Tess - will let you know when I get to it (got to finish the 2008 challenge first!).

I had so much trouble deciding on a book for you - there are so many that I think you will like; however, I eventually decided on 'Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe' by Fannie Flagg, who is one of your listed favourite authors and a book I very much enjoyed at the time.
Thanks for challenging me to read a classic, they do tend to get neglected on my bookshelf, loved Terese Raquin by him years ago. liz xx
Hi Tess
I'd like to challenge you to read When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr, as I've been umming and ahhing about whether to get this book, it's a great title too, liz x (seanat)
Thanks,Tess. Another book I have been meaning to read for a while.
Hi Tess,
I challenge you to read The Observations by Jane Harris. I really enjoyed this so hope you do too!

Hi Tess.
For the 2009 Librarything challenge I would like you to read Fup by Jim Dodge. I read this a couple of years ago and would love to re-read it. Don't forget to give me a shout.
Caroline xx
Thanks for your challenge Tess. I guessed you might also choose a Persephone book!

I'm looking forward to it, and to reading it with you.

Nicola x
Tess, I know exactly what I want to challenge you to read - it's Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson. Absolutely charming book - I hope you enjoy it.

Nicola
Hi Tess,
Can I challenge you to read 'Cider House Rules' by John Irving. I have this on my tbr pile so I'll try to read it as well,
love Shona
Thanks for the challenge, good choice!
My challenge for you is The Last Town on Earth = Thomas Mullen, I liked it lots
Tess - thank you, thank you for choosing The Gift of Rain. I so nearly chose it for you! I will very much look forward to reading it - ailie
Hi Tess

Thanks for my challenge - The Beach by Alex Garland. I'm looking forward to reading it!

My challenge to you is for you to read The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende. It's one I haven't read either, so am looking forward to comparing notes!

Michaela
hello Tess. Great choice! I only bought this a month or so ago (last time we met in York) and it has been sitting on my shelves since then looking sooo inviting!

I would like to choose The Wild Palms by William Faulkner for your challenge. It is a book my brother recommended I try, and I will aim to read it as well.
Thanks for your choice for the challenge Tess - I have meant to get around to reading this one for a long time!

Hi Tess - my 2009 challenge to you is to read Touching The Void by Joe Simpson. I hope you enjoy it.
Hi Tess, I am challenging you to read Aberystwyth Mon Amour, by Malcolm Pryce. I read it this year and really enjoyed it, so I hope you do too!

Hi Tess, sorry about that, have worked out now how to show the ratings. My revised challenge in Moonfleet by John Meade Falkner.
Hi Tess, I challenge you to read for 2009 The Secret of Crickley Hall by James Herbert.
Thanks Tess, I first read this about 20 years ago and have always wanted to read it again which is why it's listed on here.
I have, if I remember rightly isn't this a book of stories? Or have I got the wrong one?
We were posting at the exact same time lol!
Tess I'm impatient lol. If you haven't read 'Angels and Insects' by A.S. Byatt, would you read this one? I'll read it with you. Sam xx
Do you have an 'unread' tag? I'm not sure which tag to use to choose your book.
Thanks for your librarything challenge, Tess. I'm challenging you to read Doomsday Book by Connie Willis. It's on my TBR pile, so will be interested to see what you think of it!
Tess - you are quicker than me!!!! And I thought I was the excited one lol! Great challenge choice, thank you. I have a feeling I'm going to get some meaty choices (hopefully there'll be one or two gentle ones in there). The challenge helps me reads one I might have been a bit 'scared' to read. And by all means definitely join in, it helped when Amber and Hash joined me when I was reading their choices. Sam x
I landed here because I spotted a knitting book and I find myself smitten with your dog. Is he/she a Jack Russell? Briar loves them - and so does her tame human!

Jane
Thank you - this one sure does!
Sorry - that should have said 266.
Chaos - I like that! Skeelo is (modern) Greek for 'dog'. We love Greece and all things Greek so it seemed a natural choice. I've posted photos of him on this thread (http://www.librarything.com/topic/29257) at nos. 75,76 and 226 and I freely admit to being utterly besotted!
And I love Staffies too! (Nothing against JRs, just a rather special soft spot for Staffies.) Skeelo always seems to get on very well with them too. And at 6 years old now he's very nearly a contemporary of Billy's. I'm sure they'd be great friends!
Oh, and you have to tell me about your dog too. Mine (Skeelo - beautiful black lab) sends 'friendship' invite.
So now I have to ask - do you have a 'partner' or any kind of housemate who either loves or hates all your books? I am 'blessed' with a non-reading husband who simply cannot understand why anyone needs more than three books. Out of some show of consideration to him I have to try and keep the numbers down a bit (it's a small house) and that drives me crazy - having to pick out books to sell or give away every time the shelves start overflowing. Luckily our daughter is living back with us temporarily so I can keep pretending all the extra books belong to her, but she won't be here forever and then I'm going to be forced into another clear-out. How do you manage?
Wow! 600! That makes me feel soooo much better! My own is around 150-200 and I've just realised that I'm going to have to take a whole year off buying anything if I'm ever going to read them all. I don't know how things got so out of hand, because I really DO buy books to read, not just to display. At 600 I imagine you get to a point where you don't worry any more? Or certainly where you don't sleep. I keep hoping for some kind of siege where I'm forced to stay in for weeks on end and do nothing but read, yet can't get to the computer to order more books. It's the only way this is going to work out for me.
Oooh! And I see you're another Michel Faber fan! And any friend of Faber's . . . . etc
Hi there! I've been meaning to get a good look at your library for a while now as you always come at or near the top of my 'shared books' list. I see you have recently added The Life That I Have by Leo Marks and I just wondered whether you have ever read Between Silk and Cyanide by the same author? Probably like most people, I came to him through a love of 84 Charing Cross Road and BSAC is a wonderful book all about his days of working at Bletchley Park. I can highly recommend it! I also see you have Shantaram - the book I'm burbling incessantly about to anyone who will listen at the moment. I'm part-way through it right now and I'm completely engrossed and hanging onto every word. Just wondered whether you have enjoyed it too? Finally, I see you are another Brit. We are few and far between on here so I do try to say Hi whenever I spot another one. Happy reading!
P.S. I see Mitch Albom is one of your favorite authors. I grew up in on him and his columns in the Detroit Free Press (Michigan) and then fell in love with his books. He is considered one of the best sports writers of all time, but I think his literary writing is very good too.
Hi Teresa,

I saw that you are reading The Almost Moon. I'd be very interested to know what you think after you've finished. I reviewed the book earlier this year (don't read if you don't want to be influenced in your continued reading). Anyway, I also have two kids - a boy and a girl. No pets as of yet, but soon! I'm definitely going to peruse your library, as it seems we have common tastes.
Hello again,

I have finished "The Gargoyle" and loved it. I was worried that the end might disappoint but no!

Now setting off on my top 2 nudged books - "Ella Minnow Pea, which I see you have too, is both charming and clever. Then I set off on your nudge "We Have Always Lived In The Castle."

And I see you have added "Little Boy Lost", which I thought was lovely, if a touch sentimental. The conclusion is unexpected but perfect. Did you know, I wonder, that there is a Persephone group on LibraryThing ... ?

Jane

p.s. I'm looking forward to seeing your pile of books for nudging!
Hello Teresa,

"We Have Always Lived In The Castle" is one of those books I never came across(the downside of living in a rural area) but I kept seeing on LibraryThing. So I ordered up a copy and now it is in my hands I am so glad I did. It looks wonderful and it's lovely to have another positive report.

Do come and join the Book Nudgers and move it up my TBR pile!

I have been admiring your pug book - my border terrier has a very cute pug friend!

Jane

p.s. Before today I never met another finance person on LibraryThing but now you are my second - I am an accountant.
Hi Teresa,

Just saw on a post that you're reading Astrid and Veronika and got very excited because I read it earlier this year and found it to be very special. Hope you do, too!
Hi Tess,

It would be great if you get a chance to read The Magic Lands :) I look forward to talking to you about the story!
thanks Teresa40 for your nice words about my Chow Chows :-)
Anita
i saw your comment that you are about to read "the red tent" and i just wanted to say that you are in for a real treat. that is one of my favorite books ever! i also added you to my interesting libraries since we have 245 books in common and i thought your kitty cat was cute :)
Hi Tess, just catching up on my library thing! :)
Hi Tess,

I challenge you to read The Almost Moon by Alice Sebold because it's one I'd like to read myself. Reading by proxy!

Vicky
Hi Tess,

Great choice. I bought it quite recently and it looks good.

I'm challenging you to read The Lizard Cage by Karen Connelly. Along with The Road, this was far and away the best book I read last year. It looks like you rated The Road as much as me and so I will be interested to see what you think of this. I hope it is ok.
Hi Tess, I challenge you to read Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. She's one of my favourite authors and I loved this book.
Just saying hello, as we share some books! :)
Hi,
My challenge for you is The crimosn petal and the White. Quite lengthy but really enjoyable ( in my eyes anyway).

Cheryl
Hi Tess, I challenge you to read Birds Without Wings by Louis de Bernieres. I enjoyed reading this!! I hope you enjoy it.
Hi Teresa,

Not a problem, you know you could have got away with reading that one as an easy read!

Alternative choice The other side MArian Keyes (I know that's over 20 pages cos I have it!)

Enjoy
BL
Hi Teresa

Hello Tess. Thank you for chosing Rebecca for me. I have been wanting to read it anyway, and now you have given me the perfect reason to bump it to the top of the pile!
Hi Tess - I managed to find you. For the readng challenge, please can I ask you to read The End of Mr Y by Scarlett Thomas?
Thanks Tess, I like Stephen King but hardly ever read him so it will be a nice change.
Hi Tess, for your reading challenge I have chosen Blood Red, Snow White by Marcus Sedgwick.
Hi Tess, it was a difficult choice but I think perhaps 'Never Let Me Go' by Kazuo Ishiguro - what do you think?
Your choice was great too!

I loved this one!
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant is my choice for you Tess; I'm choosing ones on my shelf that I fancy reading as well!!!
Here's one I've chosen for you. I read it a few years back and found it engrossing.
http://www.librarything.com/work/3514/bo...
Hurrah, thanks Tess I haven't read this one :)
Hi Tess, I've picked One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez for you. It sounds intriguing - gypsies and a manuscript - could be something I would enjoy. However, it does have mixed reviews so I am eager to hear your thoughts on it.
Oh no, sorry Tess I have read it. I must have missed this when I rated them earlier. Sorry, you'll be getting fed up with me!
Tess, for the 2008 reading challenge please would you read:-

The Way the Crow Flies - Ann-Marie MacDonald
Thanks Tess, i actually looked at that one today wondering where shall i place it in the TBR pile
Hi Tess, To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the few on my list so far that I have actually read. I'm going to rate all the ones I have read tonight, so if you could pick an unrated one, that would be great. Thanks :)
Added! Thanks for your choice.
Hi Tess - thanks...I have meant to read it for some time. I have had yours and Sam's choices - nothing too scary so far!!
Hi Tess,

Do you fancy this one for the reading challenge?
http://www.librarything.com/work/785984/...
Hiya, will you read this http://www.librarything.com/work/856583/... for our 2008 reading challenge?
Hiya, I'm going to chose your book for our 'challenge' in the next few days ;-)
