About my libraryI actually own every book I've entered into LibraryThing, and have actually read the vast majority of them (the few exceptions await my attention now that I'm retired, but they're competing with new acquisitions--sigh!). My catalog is very much a work in progress, as I own something somewhere north of 3000 books. These are only the ones I deemed worthy of keeping after having read them; many others did not make the cut for permanent retention.

The total number of books I've read cover-to-cover is at least double the number I own; I've also read thousands of others borrowed from various public libraries (one of mankind's greatest inventions) and college libraries, from early childhood upwards. For lack of money I didn't really start buying books until my college years and after, but once started I have never stopped.

Employed for 34 years as a university librarian, I was surrounded by hundreds of thousands of books on all topics, and worked with thousands of students over the years in helping them find information they needed from those books.

So, the total number of books passing in front of my eyes in my life is some undefinable but awesome number.
