I'm afraid I'm not much help to you on Plato. Despite having some books in this area I'm more familiar with the historical side than the philosophical. What I tend to do as an amateur is to read around the subject rather than right on it. So I have enjoyed Bernard Williams' 'Shame & Necessity', Page duBois' 'Torture & Truth' and the Dodds classic 'The Greeks and the Irrational'.

I also find useful to read about the modern rereadings of the Greeks, for instance Melissa Lane's 'Plato's Progeny'.

Apart from that, there's also plenty of introductory books such as Simon Blackburn's 'Plato's Republic' and the Stanley Rosen of the same name.

There's always more books than anyone can read in a lifetime! happy hunting!
Ha! The book is actually my son's (I'm using Librarything to try and get control of at least three book collections!). I am curious at two assumptions you make - that (a) if I own a book I bought it and (b) if I have it, I've read it. I haven't read it (sounds as dry as dust to me), so can't comment on it. It is interesting though, that you seem to share my son's interest in politics, especailly in the Arab World.

All the best.
