About meI am a Reference and Instruction Librarian and departmental liaison for Art, Humanities, International Student and ESL programs, and the Basic and Transitional Skills at North Seattle College, one of three campuses within the Seattle College District. The North Seattle College Library serves a student body of over 14,000 students each year. As a Reference Librarian, I frequently make purchase recommendations for our reference, nonfiction, fiction, and media collections. Fiction books are part of this picture too -- not just our own collection, but books in general. Our library patrons do ask me about fiction recommendations when I'm working at the Reference Desk, and I refer them not only to our own fiction collection but to alternative sources. In these situations, I have also suggested that patrons comfortable with technology search for e-books or audiobook formats (when available).

Since 2003 I have worked as the Curator of the Langston Hughes African American Film Festival, a program of Seattle's Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute; I seek out books about the performing and visual arts and recommend those to colleagues. I am a member of the American Library Association (ALA), the Association of College and Research Librarians (ACRL), and the Carl Brandon Society, an organization that helps to further awareness of race and ethnicity in speculative literature and related fields. My professional background includes arts event production, film and TV production, historical research, and preservation work with film and print materials in university and private film and art archives. I earned my Masters degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Washington Information School and am an alumna of the 2012 Minnesota Institute for Early Career Librarians from Traditionally Underrepresented Groups (MIECL).
