About me Historian-in-training, especially obsessed with the early Roman Empire. My friends make fun of me for the bust of Julius Caesar that I have in my window.

About my library Most of my non-fiction is about Ancient Rome (a surprise, I know). As for fiction, I like sci-fi, fantasy, historical fiction, foreign writers, and the generally weird.

Yeah! As you can see in my library, i've read all David Gemmell's books. I think he did his best work just before he died with his Troy series.
Have you tried Stan Nicholls' Orcs books. Gemmell fans would love them.
RE Ben Pastor: since you're such a fan, fyi, I read her WWII mystery LUMEN, which was also quite interesting. CHeers, A
Just read your favourite emperors bit in the comments.
I just thought i'd add that my favourite people in roman history are not emperors, but Marius and Sulla in the republic.
Hi Marisa,
I hope you find some interesting titles in my catalog. I enjoy the ancients, especially the Later Roman period. I've also enjoyed the Roman army mysteries of 2 ladies: Ruth Downie's series of a Roman army medic in Britain and Ben Pastor (yes, female) who writes a very well-researched and erudite series on the historian Aelius Spartianus who carries out investigations for the emperor Diocletian. I see from our shared titles you're certainly on the right track. Best of luck with your studies, the world's better off with more historians. Regards, A
Well, the nerds will inherit the Earth. Assuming the cool people let us.

Have you read the Steven Saylor and/or Lindsey Davis mystery novels? The Davis novels are more entertaining, but I found Saylor's more interesting from a historical sense. Although I had read a number of Roman histories, it never really took hold until reading the Saylor series that a single person could live through the dictatorship of Sulla, the Servile Rebellion, and the Civil War.
Always liked Marcus Aurelius myself. Also Claudius, but that may be more due to the portral of him in the Robert Graves novels than to his actual personality.
so who is your favorite Roman emperor?
