About meLifelong student, currently interested in music. At the present I'm just trying to pick up instrumental skills and get an ear for chordal movement.
Cattell's p.f. A(8), B(10), C(6)

About my libraryI started collecting books about 30 years ago mostly from charity shops and secondhand bookshops. As I was then engineering student I got myself a lot of American college text stuff. Nowadays I've broader tastes becoming a little more refined, from a rough start.

yes -- it was the Arena documentary you're thinking of & the character is Dr Benway, who crops up through much of Burroughs, but probably is most famous from Naked Lunch. This is the clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgpfmehW7... There's another "wonderful" Burroughs bit from that documentary where he's walking round his New York home (a converted YMCA if memory serves) demonstrating his assorted weaponry.

A few years back I went to a screening by the director of about an hour of footage he shot with Burroughs having tea (very much like two English gents) with Francis Bacon. Really lovely, fascinating stuff and per the director there's loads of footage which was unused sitting somewhere unmarked in the BBC archives which he hasn't been able to locate.
Hi, Anthony,

Thanks for the feedback! I'm not a great believer in attaching numerical scores to unquantifiable things - my star ratings an be a bit arbitrary. Or random. If I have a system, it's to grade books against my expectation. With Surtees, my feeling was that he was enjoyable to read, but not surprisingly enjoyable, not as much of a revelation as various people had led me to think. I suppose he might deserve another star, but no more than 3 1/2. I was interested to try him, and will probably read some more some time, but I'd probably still rather read Thackeray or Trollope.

I should listen to R4 more, though - I keep missing good things like that.

Wow, never thought about the lack of music in my library (always considered music more for the MP3 player than the bookshelf). Though, now that you mention it, I've been meaning to get lessons for my bass guitar for quite a while, so maybe I'll pick up "Teach Yourself Bass: Ten Easy Lessons" to get started...
Sitwell's observation of Japan? I just ordered Tale of Genji and am looking forward to it.
Yes, that dark underbelly of Italy scratched out a few fleas. Was the Hindu book of manners that I see in your stacks any good?
I've been meaning to make a start on Greek for some time, but I still seem to spend far too much time haunting websites and bookshops (including our local Oxfam shop) and acquiring more books instead of settling down to read some of the 400 or so that I've already bought and never read.

Some day soon I shall try to work out a reading plan and set aside a short period every day for Greek, but I'm not sure when I'll get around to it.
What??
