About meCarolyn and Bob Nelson - We live in Boca Raton, FL (winter) and Orono, MN. We graduated from Carleton College and received advanced degrees from the University of Chicago (Carolyn MA/PhD English, Bob MA Humanities). Bob retired from GE after 36 years. He currently serves on non-profit boards and consults. Carolyn is the former editor of the Wing Short Title Project. She published a catalog of English serials published between 1641-1700. Recently, she published a first line index of the Osborn manuscript poetry collection at Yale. She is currently working on a first line of English manuscript poetry in major libraries.

About my libraryOur library concentrates on English/American literature and American and European history. We have some specialties. Carolyn likes detective fiction. She also has books that support her bibliographical research. Bob majored in philosophy and maintains a collection of standard philosophy texts. Political theory is also an important interest. The major specialty are first editions. These include 20th century American fiction (Faulkner, Fitzgerald, Hemingway) and poetry (Stevens, Frost, and Eliot [sort of American]); 18th century English fiction and prose (Johnson, Boswell, Hume); and 17th century poetry.

How did you happen to come across The Children of Pride. I got it because it has some of my kinfolks in it, and it was a nine days wonder around here when it first came out, but based on the other books we have in common, I don't see any connection you would have with this area or with the subject matter.
Back to say that while I do enjoy magical realism, I hated almost every moment of 100 Years of Solitude. On the fifth try I made it through. I mostly thought that the language was self-indulgent. On the other hand, I enjoyed Love in the Time of Cholera. Go figure.......
Oh My Goodness! Frank Sinatra's house!!!
Your trip on I-95 brought you within a mile or so of my house. Lumberton is the half-way point between NYC and Miami.
As to scifi, I don't watch the movies or TV programs. I do find wonderful writers of speculative fiction. I'd never have guessed! de gustibus ... and all that. (As I look at your "random books," I feel cheered by everything except Alfred North Whitehead. He's all yours!)

Congratulations to all of us for such sterling taste in books! I'm still entering books more quickly than I ought, but so far you two have more in common with me than anybody else on the site. Neither of you seems interested in science fiction, a relatively new passion for me, but I read literature, history, and mysteries. I can't help waving and saying, "Look at me!" to folks with whom I have this much in common.
