Steve,

(a) Learn to live on a really pathetic salary (i.e., have a well-employed spouse, or save up from the IT days).
(b) Volunteer at an archival institution to see how you feel about the work on a day-to-day basis. This is probably a good idea no matter what you think you want to do after recovery from sysadmin. :)
(c) Find a library school near you that has a strong archives track and get an MLS, or get a degree in history with specialized archival courses added. Ideally (but very time-consuming), get a dual MA/MLS in History and Library Science (pardon me ... that would be Information Science or Library and Information Science). Check with the
SAA web site for institutions near you (probably UPitt or UMd).
(d) Re-read "a" ... Although having strong IT skills will give you a leg-up and makes for possibilities to hybridize yourself into a better-paying position.
