About meYou may know me better as MidnightRain, my original username here at LibraryThing. I switched to BookishRuth in 2008 to coordinate with my book review blog at BookishRuth.com. Come say hello!

If I had to choose a Disney character to sum up my life, Belle from Beauty and the Beast would fit the bill quite nicely: A free spirit with endless curiosity and a voracious appetite for books. (The fact that she ended up with a library bigger than my house has absolutely nothing to do with it. Okay, maybe a little bit...)

About my library"Good as it is to inherit a library, it is better to collect one." -- Augustine Birrell

I have fairly eclectic taste in reading material, and my library tends to reflect that. My high school English courses instilled a great love for the classics; a love which only seems to grow as time goes on. I love a good mystery; Sherlock Holmes, Mary Russell, Miss Marple and Amelia Peabody are old friends. Young adult and children's literature never fails to take me back to the joyous summers of my youth, which were always filled with reading. Movie and television tie-in novels (especially Doctor Who related books) are a not-so-guilty pleasure. My thirst for science fiction started at the age of 13, after reading Sphere by Michael Crichton. It's a thirst that will never be quenched. My love of history -- specifically ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, colonial America and Victorian England -- often makes me wonder if I happened to be born in the time period.

My wish list often competes in size with my actual library. Somehow I think this will always be the case, no matter how many books find their way from the wish list to the library.

Noticed you liked Lovely Bones, and I was wondering if you'd be interested in reviewing my new novel and posting your comments here, as well as a few other book-related sites. Thought you might like my book since it also contains a young female narrator struggling with a series of tragic circumstances. I could e-mail you the novel in an e-book format if you'd like (I'm out of physical copies at the moment). Here's a link to a summary (and a sample chapter) in case you'd like to read more about the book before you commit:

Thanks,

You like Doctor Who and Sherlock Holmes!!!! What do you think of the new Ms. Marple on PBS if you've seen them? I'm new to Librarything your profile seemed really cool. I am a library student in Boston and I think being able to organize my books in any sort of comprehensible system. I'm also a history student and I love the Revolution especially here in the northern theatre, whats your favorite part of American History?
Hey there,
Its been a very long time since we spoke. Hope you are well.

You must be looking forward to the Touchwood miniseries starting monday on BBC America. I am planning to watch it even though I gave up on the series awhile ago. I got into it because of Capt. Jack who I love but the fact that everyone was dating everyone else and everyone was in love with one person though dating or marrying someone else just got too much for me. But since this is a miniseries and I am seriously pinning for Dr. Who}still can't believe David Tennant is leaving :( }, I will be tuning in for this series.

Anyway just saying hello. Hope you are well and happy.
Trish
Hi Ruth,

Thanks for reading it!

Hi Ruth,
I am a huge fan of lighthouses and I see from your blog that you read lots of books with a lighthouse setting. Thanks for reviewing them, as I will be checking some of them out really soon! My husband and I have many lighthouse pictures on the east coast, and some in California and several in Hawaii that we have taken.
Re: Persuasion: wonderful to read it this year! Let me know what you think.
"It is only in the intentional silence of vigil and meditation, or in the quiet places of nature, that we encounter the song of the universe. Like the wind through the telegraph wires, this song echoes along the pathways of the cosmic web: it includes the celestial spinning of the planets, as well as the hum of insects and the dancing song of the grass; it includes the song of all the ancestors and spirits as well as the beating of our own hearts."

If I ever get around to adding anything to it!
Thanks for adding BannedBooksLibrary to your Interesting Libraries. Happy Reading!
You're very welcome, just glad I could help out! Book will be on its way to you tomorrow. x
Hi--I noticed that you and a few others here on LT have the book Against Medical Advice. I was wondering how you got a copy? Most of the tags say Publishers Weekly, I signed up for the daily newsletter a few weeks ago, never received it, and now am left to wonder if I should have pursued it. I couldn't find any ARC's on their website, so I think I'm looking in the wrong place. I sent an email to the publisher the first week in Aug. as a cold request but never got a response. Dang it...I really wanted to read it. I tried a cold request for The Gate House too, in fact, I sent in two a couple of weeks apart. Again, I never heard. If you have any suggestions for what I'm doing wrong that everyone else is doing right, I'd really really appreciate them!

Thanks!

Kelly

Hi: I know you are going to like them. Please let me know what you think! Its so funny, I thought I was the only one who had "seasonal moods" when it comes to reading.

I am plodding my way through the new Kathy Reichs. Its an ARC I have to review and it is sooooo slow going - I can't wait to finish it to get to some of my other books.

Enjoy! TINA
Thank you so much Ruth, I've just received The Necklace, and the card is lovely too. I look forward to reading this.I've been reading your blog and like it very much, although I just realized that when I came here and saw your picture. You're Bookish Ruth! It will take me some time to match online names with blogs or names. Thanks again.
Hey, I just reserved "The Good Thief" for you on BM. My username there is the same as here. I can't send it out until I get my review written, but that should be sometime this week.
I'm so glad! I went ahead and paid the extra money to send it priority because I know media mail can take forever.

I am sure you'll enjoy it :)
Hi: I would be happy to. My absolute favorites. Start with the book Deviant Ways - by Chris Mooney - this book had me at the first chapter and kept me there.

Also, ANYTHING by PJ Parrish is excellent. I also like ANYTHING by William Tapply - although he would be a little more mystery than thriller.

I also really love James Patterson and his Alex Cross series. I don't like any of Patterson's other series, but the Alex Cross are the best.

I hope I have helped you a little. Please let me know if you end up reading any of these - I would love to know what you think. TINA

You seem to be a Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie fan! I am a Sherlock Holmes nutter, and I am also fond of Christie's work... (I like Marpole more than Perot, tho')

Since you also (from your profile) like Victorian England, I would encourage you to try to get your hands on a copy of William Baring-Gould's Annotated Sherlock Holmes - he goes into GREAT DETAIL on all the elements of Victorian life that we would no longer understand as we read the stories. There is a newer set of annotated Holmes, that is also quite good, but the two really don't "overlap" all that much in what they cover, but B-G goes into far more fascinating detail about life in Victorian times - you also get an excellent selection of illustrations in these. A link to used copies of the Baring-Gould on Amazon appears here (unfortunately, the B-G is no longer in print): HERE
