About meWhat can I say? A mid-western girl, blonde, blue eyes with imagination that soars. I love to read, I love books. Lately my book habits are to buy, not read. While I love reading time just hasn't been on my side for a while. Many people I know don't understand how I can spend so much money on books. I can't help myself. I was homeschooled (10-12) and now work part time as an administrative assistant and event coordinator. When I can fit it in I also enjoy quilting. I'm a Christian and love my Savior Jesus Christ. I'm the oldest of 4. Just like hangin around with my family, going to movies with friends and prowling used book stores.

About my libraryOld, new paperbacks, hardcover, sci-fi, historical, classics, fantasy, mystery, biographies and so much more. I like many kinds of books and love suggestions from people, I try my hardest to read what is recommended.

I'm also kind of picky about the publications of books I buy. Most of the time, I hold out for nice, pretty (aka cool art work) hardcover editions. I'm specifically in search of a nice, old, unabridged edition of The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas. Any Suggestions????

I attempt to keep my books organized, but as bookshelf space slowly dwindles and the number of books increases faster organization isn't easy. I have to depend upon my mind to remember where everything is shelved and that sometimes entails keeping myself from pulling my hair out over a lost book. Someday when I have a large house of my own, I will have a very LARGE library room and can result back to my anal organizational skills again.

Books are the treasured wealth of the world and the fit inheritance of generations and nations.
-Henry David Thoreau

Hi there! I thought you might be interested in this little macabre exercise we have going for Cranioklepty. I know you already have a copy of the book, but you're eligible to win a finished copy. Or tell your friends!

The question is: If you could steal a skull, any skull, whose would you choose, and why?

Cranioklepty (the theft of skulls) has fallen out of fashion, but it wasn’t very long ago that stealing skulls was viewed by some as akin to possessing genius. Colin Dickey’s forthcoming CRANIOKLEPTY: GRAVE ROBBING AND THE SEARCH FOR GENIUS (Pub date: September 29, 2009) takes us on an extraordinary history of a peculiar kind of obsession. The desire to own the skulls of the famous, for study, for sale, for public (and private) display, seems to be instinctual and irresistible in some people. So we ask again, WHOSE SKULL WOULD YOU DIG?

Send us your choice—by leaving a comment on our profile page or via email (cranioklepty@gmail.com) between September 9 and October 21, 2009. We’ll be posting the most lively ones (no pun intended) and as a thank you, we’ll be sending a copy of CRANIOKLEPTY to the folks whose selections most intrigued us. Winners will be announced on October 31, 2009 (yes, on Halloween). For complete rules and regulations visit http://cranioklepty.com/pick-a-skull/rul.... We do not, for the record, endorse the actual stealing of skulls!

My pleasure, it was fun picking them out! :) Hope you enjoy them, have a lovely New Year.
You're welcome, I found your library interesting. Lol.
I've only read her Water series as well. I thought they were okay, as far as young adult books go; they could have been better, but they definitey weren't horrible.
I actually have a very abridged copy of Victor Hugo's Hunchback of Notre Dame that I love. It's like a greatest hits album, all the action and none of the slow parts. I did buy another copy so I would have the larger text. I'm not sure if it states unabridged or not, I'll have to find it and look. I know what you mean about starting a series in paperback. Do you put much energy/time/money on replacing with hardbacks? I replace if I happen upon a copy cheaply, without much trouble.
Well, I hope you had a nice holiday. Have a good week!
Hello there! I was in awe when I read your profile because I'm also looking for hardcover version of the Count of Monte Cristo! Right now I'm torn because most of the ones I find are abridged. Barnes & Noble have one on their website which is stated unabridged. I get bogged down in a lot of French Lit, like Les Miserables, so part of me says 'it's abridged for a reason' but the purist in me wants it all. What's your opinion? Have a great day!
Checking to see which book that was...oh, yes, The Scar. China Mieville's writing makes me head explode.

Can't pick just one, Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, and green. You?
Why thank you.

We are the only two people who have Megan Whalen Turner listed as a favorite author? Travesty!
The your-finding-of-and-commenting-on my pagey thing.
And a reply hello--is it the pirates?
This is another book forum I belong to that you might like to have a look at. Don't feel you have to join, but everyone is very friendly. It's where I heard about LibraryThing and quite a few of us have joined up. :)

Thanks for the kind offer, but I live in NZ and the cost is quite high for postage. I just need to order it through our library system. I saw the movie on TV, ummm, it's hard to know whether to recommend things to other people or not. I liked it because the characters were delightfully eccentric, I would certainly watch it again if I had the chance. Also had very good actors/actresses in it. The story reminds me a bit of Stella Gibbons writing ....do you know her? She wrote Cold Comfort Farm.
Hi Maddie. Just saw on Book and Reader that you'd read I Capture the Castle and since I belong to LibraryThing, thought I'd drop you a note. Haven't read it myself but saw the movie, it starred Tara Fitzgerald and Bill Nighy and was excellent - I've been trying to track down the book ever since.
Thanks for recommending the Bloody Jack series. I read and enjoyed the first book and look forward to reading the rest.
Here's a pointer to Quo Vadis.

I don't have an opinion about whether you (or anyone else) does too much light reading. When you look at other people's reading lists, do you make judgments? It doesn't occur to me to. I'm just glad that other people enjoy reading and that there are different types of books for people's different moods.

Like you, I loved the Tricksters books. I listened to an excellent audio production. I do most of my fiction "reading" through my car stereo system.
Thanks for your reply -- I'm glad to know that I guessed right and that you enjoyed Pirates! -- and for the recommendation. I looked through your catalog to see if you had any Tamora Pierce books. I saw that you had the Alianne books, but I don't know if you read them yet. I liked them very much but found other of her books more accessible. Based on your interests, I'd recommend some of her other books, either Alanna: The First Adventure, about a girl who disguises herself as a boy in order to become a knight, or First Test, about a girl who openly tries to become a knight.

I see from your profile that you are a Christian and that you like historical fiction. In that case, you might like Quo Vadis, although it's not as light of reading as some of your other favorites.
Judging by the books we have in common and your interest in pirates, I think you would like Pirates! by Celia Rees. If you read it, let me know what you think.
