This is how we have used tags to implement a checkout system for this catalog on LibraryThing.

If the person checks out a book, enter their "username-out" in the tags (changing "username" to whatever their username is). This allows a simple search of "out" to turn up all users who have a book out.

If the person checks in a book, change the "username-out" tag to "username-in". This way you can do a search of "username" and it will turn up all the books they have ever checked out, including the one they have now.
