About me I'm a thirty-something librarian in the Boston/Cambridge area. I read mostly literary fiction, graphic novels, manga and nonfiction history and memoirs. "Possession" is probably my all-time favorite novel. My favorite nonfiction book is "A Walk in the Woods" by Bill Bryson.

Right now I'm reading "Marie Antoinette: The Journey," "The Heretic's Daughter" and "My Father's Paradise," as well as several volumes of short stories and manga.

Over on my blog (www.bostonbibliophile.com) I host the weekly "Tuesday Thingers" meme, where I ask a question about participants' use of LibraryThing and we share links and visit each others' blogs. Come join every Tuesday!

About my library The books in my catalogue are books that I've read, books I'm reading now, books I want to read. Most of them are in my home at the moment. I weed the shelves and swap books often, so the collection is always changing.

Caught your post on the Librarians who Librarything (about book awards).. Had to recommend [Confessions of a Closet Catholic]. It's a great teen Jewish identity book.
I also have CALL HER BLESSED by Juliene Berk; a paperback.
I have no idea why you received five comments; I only sent one. Also, it ended up under your post as well. Something in the air last night!! Irene
Thanks for befriending me. You have a great and interesting library.

Cheers,

Karen Harrington
thanks for adding me as well. i look forward to browsing your library shelf for recommendations in the future! happy reading!
Hey, glad you got the book and that it is something you'll (hopefully) enjoy! And once again, thanks for passing on your ARC!
Hi: I just visited your blog and its great. I am an avid fan of Boston and the first time I visited the public library I cried. So many choices, so many books - it makes our pathetic little Montreal libraries look like --- well --- the pathetic little libraries they unfortunately are :(

I will visit your site often!
Hi bostonbibliophile - have you gotten Pirkei Avos With a Twist of Humor yet? I haven't and was just wondering if I should worry yet. Thanks, karenmarie
A pleasure - it was absolutely brilliant all the more so as I learnt about an episode in the second world war that I had never heard about before. The respect and care for your neighbour regardless of faith, gender or nationality was like a beacon!
Hi Marie - I clicked on your favourite library and thought wow - is that where you work as I 'knew' you are a librarian?!! Forgive me for presuming =) Julie
Marie - I just looked at your favourite library info and saw the picture - is that where you work?
Hi Marie - The Pilgrim Road comprises a travel story with a message for each day of the lenten season. It is written by a Benedcitine monk from Newark who was given a sabbatical year away from his teaching duties. What I especially love is that a number of the places he visits are either ones I know because I have visited them myself or I know of them! In a nutshell it explores the deeper meaning and richness of life as we travel on - for me it is a quietly inspirational read.
I notice that you are just reading a Mary Doria Russell - I have just completed A Thread of Grace - five star excellence in my humble opinion.
Trust all is well with you - Julie
What is manga and does it come in audio form? Based on your recommendation, I'm currently looking for a used audio for Possession. Eye damage prevents me from reading novels and I'm currently in a rut as to what to get next in the audio area. By the way, we have the same quilt book (the kitty book). Take care!
Hi,
Glad it arrived safely. Hope you like it better than I did; either way, it would be nice (though certainly nowhere required) if you'd give a brief review. Thanks for the offer but there's no need to send me anything. I'm so backlogged right now I wouldn't get to it for ages anyway.

Enjoy,

Dave
Welcome to Books Compared! It's great to have you join us.
Mariekat?! I misread your moniker, and was getting ready to alert the attorneys. Then I put on my glasses.

Carry on & apologies,

Makifat
Marie - Happy New Year. Here is the yahoo group url for War and Peace. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WarPeace08... Do sign up we will look forward to hearing from you!
The group will be reading War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy during the first few months of 2008.

February 15 - Volume II (through 8 parts)
March 15 - Volume III (through 11 parts)

I am reading the Pevear and Volkhonsky translation and I am loving it!
Julie
Thank you so much for the SantaThing book! I had heard of it before, but never got a chance to read it. I look forward to reading it as my first book of 2008! Thanks. (PS: Love the quilt pic!)
Hi Marie - just browsing and found your War and Peace site. How are you doing? I am in a Yahoo group with a number of LT friends who are reading it in sections. How is Santa getting on!
My pleasure Marie. I searched on Amazon.co.uk under "karolina lanckoronska" and that took me to the book. Silly me - you are USA. I have just done the same search and it is amazon.com as well! I would offer to lend you my copy but I have already leant it to Maria in Denmark!
Thanks Marie - yes I have read Suite Francaise - a five star read for me! At about the same time I also read this much more obscure book that may be of interest to you;
Those Who Trespass Against Us: One Woman's War Against the Nazis by Karolina Lanckoronska (ISBN 1844134172). http://www.librarything.com/work/930927

I found it incredible and was often wishing to record quotes. Please indulge me if I share a couple here;
Having just given a young consumptive soldier a drink the author Karolina Lanckoronska wrote

'For my part I reflected, for the thousandth time in my life, that to make education available to all who want it, without lowering standards, is one of humanity's highest ideals'.
The dying soldier had become more and more attached to Karolina who was working for the Polish Red Cross. He had shared details of his life from how he read all the books in his village library to domestic details about his Mother's cooking. As a countess she had had a privileged upbringing and was in fact a university lecturer. On hearing this the soldier was incredulous that she should be caring for him....

Thought of the day quote
'Over the next few days we removed everything of value from the flat and stored it for safe keeping with people we knew. That brought home to me how very uncomfortable it is to have possessions - though I was soon to learn that it's equally uncomfortable not to have any.'
How does this speak to me, my possessions and of materialism ......
Marie - I just saw your santa thing info, came to your library and just had to comment. Possession is my all time favourite as well! I am participating in a challenge to read 8 books in 8 categories for 2008. One of my categories is war and women so I am going to be reading a number of WW2 books, a number related to the Holocaust. I love your quilt - you certainly have a lot of quilting patterns!
Marie,

I saw your comment about requesting some of the Gefen books. I have, too. If I get one that you don't, and you want it for your library, I can send it your way after I do my review.

How are you liking Gods Behaving Badly? I read it for the Amazon Vine program, and while I started out a bit dubious about the concept, I decided it was a hoot!
