About meI am a lab tech who lives in NYC and am spoiled by all the book stores. But my favorites were in London while living there.

About my libraryI try not to be too narrow but rather to taste broadly of what is out there. So I keep a balance between American Idol, football(when in season), and of course books.

Glad you enjoyed the Iliad. I'm afraid I'm totally addicted. After the Odyssey you could try Herodotus Histories. My favourite version of this is The Landmark Herodotus edited by Robert B. Strassler. The supporting material in this - maps, explanations etc. is really helpful. The Penguin Classics translation is fine also, especially if you just want to read it and not go into too much explanatory detail.
I think Fagles is an excellent translation and it is a very good choice, as it reads well and is fairly close to the original. Lattimore is closer to the original, but is a bit clumsy and not such an enjoyable read. I am also fond of Stanley Lombardo's translations; like Fagles he colours the original sometimes, but it's a change to read Homer in a fresh, modern style. I love his readings (on DVD) of the Iliad and Odyssey. There is a thread about best translations of the Iliad and Odyssey. Perhaps you've seen it - if not I'll get the details.
Hi Carmody,

Many thanks for your contributions to the History group. They are always very much appreciated and I continue to learn.

I notice that you like a lot of scifi and am trying to cut my teeth on Cyteen but there certainly does seem to be a lot by her.

Many thanks again.

Ur.
Hi Carmody,

Wish I could help (re: Chinese history threads), but I haven't read many books on Chinese history- at least, not enough to have any expertise on the subject.

I see you just read 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom'. What did you think?

I noticed that you have several of the Robert Caro books on LBJ. What is you opinion about them?
