About me Real name: Christopher Holland
------------------------------
Work as a web/technology consultant, currently working on LibraryThing itself. I've worked on the in-place editing for your catalog. I wrote most of the code behind Common Knowledge. I wrote most of the code for displaying reviews on the site. I prototyped most of LibraryThing Local. And I've dabbled in most of other code at some level or another. See my WikiThing page for more information about my past and current LibraryThing projects.

You can get me at christopher at librarything dot com.
Also do quite a bit of photography, drawing, and painting. You can find some of my photos on Flickr under the username of conceptDawg.

I graduated from Mississippi State University and on weekends in the Fall you can most likely find me back in Starkville for a football game and some tailgating. Feel free to contact me and hang out at our tailgate if you're going to a game at MSU.

My ideas about design and interface were summed up rather brilliantly by Mr. Emerson quite a while before I came along:
"The beautiful rests on the foundations of the necessary."
"We ascribe beauty to that which is simple; which has no superfluous parts; which exactly answers its ends."
Goodness, that is perfect.

About my library Most of my books are related to either art and art history or computer technology. I have a few fiction paperbacks, but those usually end up being given to friends or "loaned" out permanently when I am finished with them.

I have eclectic interests: archaeology; history; technology; history of technology; secret societies (freemasons, templars, mostly from my interest in archaeology as I've been to many of the places where their histories played out).

Congrats!

And thanks for the help with my problem.
Congrats on your beautiful little girl!!
I found the pics of your daughter. She gorgeous!!
Best wishes, Chris, to you and your wife on your new parenthood!! So where is the information about your little one?!
Just FYI
Your changelog on the wiki is displaying "March 2008" instead of "May 2008" at present.
on zeitgheist, largest libraries: keeping in the tradition of listing the top one percent the largest libraries, coiuld you please expand the number from 3,000 to 4,000? Now that we have more than 400,000 members? Of course, you couild expand it to 5,000 members since we shall meet 500,000 by the end of the year if not by the end of summer.

Thank you.
The bubbly is on ice. All the best to you and your wife. All LT expects a "Yellow Box" on the home page -- "It's a ....."

Jim
I just want to thank you for all the hard work you do for this site, and especially for all the recent bugs you have been fixing and working on fixing. It really is impressive. Thank you!
I was just editing a book's information under via the 'Edit' pencil, and got an error when I accidentally included a ' instead of a ". I was able to reproduce it with another book, adding a ' to the end of the Novelization tag. The message I got was:

You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '12 Monkeys: A Novel', books_sortcharacter=1, books_authorunflip='Hand, Eliza' at line 3

UPDATE bookstack SET books_tags='Science Fiction,Novelization'', books_title='12 Monkeys: A Novel', books_sortcharacter=1, books_authorunflip='Hand, Elizabeth', books_date='1995', books_ISBN='0061056588', books_admin_sameness=1819554821, books_yourrev='0', books_sort_author='handelizabeth', books_rating=0, books_datebought = 0, books_datestarted = 0, books_dateread = 0, books_sameness_resolved = 2033384120, books_copies = 1, books_lang = 'eng', books_lang2 = '', books_lang_original = '', books_indexed = 0, books_refresh = 1 WHERE books_id=15279005 AND books_userid='dnorum'
- fatal error (31.1)

I apologize if this is mentioned elsewhere, but it looks like there's something buggy with whatever code handles the SQL commands (queries? - I'm not familiar with SQL).
How do I turn off "Community Knowledge"? When people start renaming books in order to indulge their private fetishes -- disregarding the actual title on the book itself -- it is beyond stupid.

Nor -- again -- are any of my Orwell part of any "Complete Works of" -- yet that is how they are repeatedly MIScategorized.
Hello Chris .. new member here .. great site/concept .. I would like to change my user name but the function shows as unavailable (in the Tools tab) .. do you know if it will be available soon? Thanks.
sphece, I can't answer you since you don't have comments enabled nor do you have your email public. The best place to ask is in Talk under Bug Collectors group. That way we can have some back-and-forth without you needing to enable stuff on your profile.
Can't figure this out.. The system will not let me log back into two groups that I created and made "private" , and now I would like to delete them. How can I do that?
Thanks
Are you back to work?
Just a bump about Other Authors problem.
Get well soon. You ARE missed.
Thanks for getting back to me...once specific example is with the author Elizabeth Zimmerman...if I enter Elizabeth in the Search it returns all of the books in my library by Elizabeth Zimmerman...if I type in Aimmerman or Elizabeth Zimmerman or Zimmerman, Elizabeth it returns NO books...strange. Thanks for looking into this for me. DJNL
Congratulations on the "new" job. Also, you have a face! Who knew?
Congratulations on your full-time employment (shacklement?) Chris, it is long overdue! :)
Hi, Love your site...am new to it...question in Search...when I type in just the last name of an author to search for in my library it comes back with no results (I know the name is there), but if I type in the same author's first name, the correct results show and if I type in the whole name, with last, first ot first, last..again no results??? What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

I can test when on that computer, which will depend on the weather tonight.
Hey cD, got a question for you... on Common Knowledge, on the book pages, is it possible to have a 'misc notes' spot? I'm thinking it would be interesting to notate an author's first novel or similar info. I don't think it belongs in the disambiguation notice though. What are your thoughts?
My Profile page frequently superimposes over other pages. What is going on here? Anything I can do to stop this?
