About meI'm an anthropologist and librarian supporting research and teaching about Africa and anthropology at a large public university. I enjoy managing and building these collections (yes, I get paid to buy books...eat your hearts out), sharing what I know about libraries, anthropology and Africa, learning more from the many people I encounter in my job and helping users find what they need. Along the way I find time to learn and appreciate what's available in my own institution (including rare books and antique maps) and elsewhere. I consider it my duty to work for library users, while at the same time unveiling some of the mysteries of libraries so they can navigate this hugely complex institution on their own.

About my libraryI like my books and tend to rate the ones I document here rather highly. I especially like to list books that few others have read and to observe my own parsimony in choosing what to include here from my own shelves. A confession: sometimes I list books that I've read but don't own. In my defense, I buy these sometimes long after reading them (for the first time).

Thanks for your comment! Life Turns Man Up and Down is so important to me in terms of teaching precisely because it represents a huge class of materials that we don't really have in most libraries: print ephemera of many kinds, samidzat, and so on. In the context of 20th Century Africa, all of that seems to me what I should be teaching if I want to talk about print culture (or culture generally) rather than formal novels by writers whose work largely circulates among Western audiences.
