Chase's early stuff was the best. "Dead" was his 2nd book, I think,
after "No Orchids". Wasn't he sued by Chandler for plagarism?
Just read you Willeford review. I've finished all of Willeford.
He ranks right up there. Ever read "The Machine in Ward 11"?
Horace McCoy is another old favorite. "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye" is an
all-time great book.
Nice review on Casino Moon. I finished it last week and just couldn't get my head around exactly what was deficient about it, but you hit the major defects dead on.
I have an old ed. of "12 Chinamen ...". My ed. says "Chinks".
I guess they had to clean Chase up to be politically correct. ;-)
I just finished "River Girl". Williams is an old favorite, as well as
"The Dead Stay Dumb" by Chase. One of the most hardboiled.
