About meI'm a blogger, photographer, songwriter and performer. I work as the Editor-in-Chief at Canoe.ca, a major Canadian web portal. I'm very involved in the roots and folk music scene in Ontario, and spend my leisure time traveling, gardening, canoing, and fixing up my home, which has been in my family for 5 generations. Now that my living room has been mostly renovated, I can actually relax and read without the anxiety of looking at my bare stud walls, beckoning me to more work...
About my libraryI have had a lifelong passion for books, which I now share with my 12-year-old daughter. As a youth I was a literary omnivore, and would read anything from cereal boxes to James Bond books to Readers' Digest to all the usual classics.
Today, I mostly read relatively accessible non-fiction about religion, philosophy, science, history, etc. I have a weak spot for graphic novels, (perhaps because comics were frowned upon in my childhood home!) my favourite being Tezuka's "Buddha" series.
I do love classic fiction, from Cervantes to Hemingway, and have an abiding fondness for Mark Twain and Kurt Vonnegut. But for some reason I'm very, very sparing about approaching new fiction - I think I find it overwhelming to encounter new realms, and I'm sensitive to authors' tendencies to share their baggage with the world at large via their books.
I've found myself developing a soft spot for writers whose eye is keen but whose voice is gentle and in whom a strong sense of place prevails. Leacock, Keillor, Twain and Herriot share this sensibility, and its one I hope see revealed in my own books once they begin to be born.
The great exception here is anything my daughter reads - if she likes it (Narnia, Harry Potter, Golden Compass) then I'll read it, and probably like it too. As a parting thought - my favourite radio program is Elinor Wachtel's "Writers In Company" on CBC here in Canada. I love to listen to authors talk with her, but rarely go on to read their books. I have no idea why...

However, I live in Australia. Perhaps we are related way back. My family originally came from Guildford in England.
Cheers - minnie
