About my libraryStar-based rating systems are a little strange. One doesn't really judge all the books against each other - you'd end up with a distribution of all 5s and 0s. Instead, you end up judging sets of books within themselves. E.g., a Robert Jordan book that gets a '4' is in no way better than a Terry Pratchett book that gets a '3' - the two are entirely different ranges.

I do not claim to be consistent in the application of this. More likely, star ratings are the sum of two values - an overall rating, which IS consistent across all books, and a within-group rating, which is not, and which sometimes causes two distributions of overall ratings to overlap to such an extent that two ratings may no longer be properly ordinal.
