Sorry this is a bit delayed. LAaW was written by my latin professor at the University of Oklahoma, which is why we used it. I don't recall the contents in great detail (and the book is not in my current apartment), but I seem to recall using at least snippets of "real" latin fairly early on. Lots of Caesar, bits of the vulgate bible, I think some Catullus as well. The course she taught was an honors accelerated introduction, and the pace of the book matches pretty well. There's nothing fancy to the book (no pictures, no cutesy "dick et jane" stories), but if all you want is grammar and exercises, it's as good a book as any.
Hope this helps! Maybe I'll review the book in earnest next time I have it at hand.
