About meI like reading books that teach me something. That's why I have a wide range of topics. Either fiction or non-fiction.

I have very eclectic tastes so my books range over a lot of topics. If I think I'll learn something or be amused, I'll read it.

"A library is thought in cold storage." -- Herbert Samuel, politician and diplomat (1870-1963)

My two favorite things in life are libraries and bicycles. They both move people forward without wasting anything. The perfect day: riding a bike to the library. -- Peter Golkin, Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum

These are not books, lumps of lifeless paper, but minds alive on the shelves. -- Gilbert Highet, writer (1906-1978)

I have always imagined that paradise will be a kind of library. -Jorge Luis Borges, writer (1899-1986)

The actions of men are like the index of a book--they point out what is most remarkable in them. -- Author unknown

Few are too young, and none too old, to make the attempt to learn. Booker T. Washington, Up from Slavery, 1901

No two persons ever read the same book. -- Edmund Wilson

Learning is weightless, a treasure you can always carry easily. -- Chinese Proverb

Learning is discovering that something is possible. -- Fritz Perls (1893-1970)

You don't understand anything until you learn it more than one way. -- Marvin Minsky

Whatever is good to know is difficult to learn. -- Greek Proverb

Oh, no! Not ANOTHER learning experience!

About my library__________________________________________________

I like books that will give me insight to a topic that's not really mainstream. Sample good topics: graphic novels (non-super hero), humor, historical, sociological, underground, feminist.

I don't tend to like the following topics, although I've been known to read these kinds of books: Romance, biblical, animals, cookbooks, vampires, bondage, military, non-English, super hero, elves, dragons, fairies.

I really hate to be gifted a book that's one of a set. Unfortunately, it's hard to avoid getting graphic novels that are not standalone. I've scoured graphic novels myself, front to back, at the comic book store to avoid getting part of a set. Only to find the dreaded word "continued" on the last page. Then discover I only have the first book in a set of nine or some such nonsense. Aaaaaaaargh, so annoying.

Even worse is to have only a single book in the middle of a series. Imagine a book you're reading. Now thumb to about the 2/3 point of the book and rip out 20 pages. OK, those 20 pages make up your book. You now have to pay anywhere from $6 to $23 to buy other chunks of the book to make up a whole. Count on one of the chunks being almost impossible to find, in fact, you may not ever run across the missing chunk. Your compiled book may stay at 92% complete and the missing part will contain crucial information. Now you have an idea what it's like to only have one book in a graphic novel series.

Thanks for the suggestions! Caliban's War is a great series. Have you read it? Certainly the best new book I've read in the last few years. That Harun Farocki book, Serious Games, looks really cool too. I saw his installation in new york last year, Images of War at a Distance, and the book you recommended sounds like it is in a similar vein.

When it comes to comics, have you ever checked out the Hellblazer series? It's about this totally selfish alcoholic jerk who gets mixed up in black magic, but you still kind of like him because he's one of those ultimate survivor types (it's what the film Constantine was based on...don't know if that recommends it exactly...). There's some on going themes, but each story is fairly self contained. It's been running for like 20 years, but the Garth Ennis era is a pretty safe bet.
I am really, really please you liked the selections! I had fun coming up with a Wish List this time and I was ecstatic that your amount allowed me to pick 3 whole books! All three books, while vastly different are absolutely brilliantly written and absorbing reads IMO. I had tremendous fun with them all when I read them and consider the Henrietta Lacks and Pump Six two of the best books I personally read in 2011. Zeitoun was definitely one of the best books I read back in 2009. So glad to read in your comment that the Lacks story was something on your radar and had piqued your interest in the past. I think you're gonna LOVE it and also see why it got such critical acclaim.

A final note, if you haven't already you should let LT's Jeremy know you got your books by checking in on the "Tracking ST 2011 Arrivals" thread so he can note it and then add your location to the awesome ST 2011 GoogleMap!

Long time no see, I hope all is well.
Hello, my Secret Santa! :D

Just wanted to drop you a note to thank you *so* much for the selections you chose for my daughter Liberty! I love that they'll all be able to grow with her and the keepsake that came with the story collection(!).

The shadow puppet book btw is hilarious; my whole family thinks so. Richard Nixon! Ben Gurion! Charles De Gaulle! *giggle*

Again, thank you very much for your lovely choices. :)
Thanks for the SantaThing picks! I'll definitely get the one you selected that didn't come (may have been because the bookseller I picked had a higher price?)--it does look right down my alley. Hope you got some good stuff, too!
Thank You for the nice comment. I read "Blankets" a few years ago and its one of the graphic novels that sticks with me.
Thanks for the lovely comment! I recently read and enjoyed The Imposter's Daughter (my first graphic novel) and I read the Sheri Tepper many many years ago and thought it might fit in with your interests. Hope you enjoy the books your Santa was able to choose, and maybe get a chance to check out my suggestions (if you haven't already read them of course!)

Hi Devan,
I won't wait months to answer you this time. Thanks for the suggestions.
If you want to write with tea, you'd better use it "reduced" (let it simmer to half, like a sauce) according to http://www.dotapea.com/encresdiverses.htm
You will appreciate "The Aroma of Tea" by Dudok de Wit, an animation all drawn with washes of tea (many sources on the Net).
Best wishes
Kris
Happy SantaThing! It was a fun challenge trying to find things I thought you'd like based on your blurb and your book catalog. I figured there was a good chance you'd read Larsen's Passing since it's the better known of her books. I hope you enjoy Quicksand. And the D&Q collection too. It's hard to gauge comics taste, and what you're familiar with beyond your collection.
I'm glad to hear you're enjoying Persepolis. It was one of my favorite reads this year, and I'm planning to watch the movie this weekend--I heard it was also very, very good. (And I actually ended up getting Persepolis 2 for my Secret Santa giftee--I think it was a popular gift this year!)
I'll let you know what I think!
Thanks! I'll try to pick up a book or two for my challenges this year. Is there any particular book that you really liked of hers?
Well, for a while, in college, I mostly slobbered over my cookbooks as well, though I've always been a rather good cook. I just added a couple more cookbooks I recently acquired, one is for Kwanzaa, quite possibly my favorite cookbooks aside from Julia's.
Hi Devans,
thanks for marking my library as interesting. Yes, I have been busy since we last communicated. I'm finished posting ,only adding my new purchases.
Thanks for the recommendations :) I'll holla!
This is jpeirpont from cocoalounge. Great collection!
I'm finally getting back with you, but I've cleaned up the list. Thanks!
Thanks Debra
