About meYes, that's me in the photo - I'm bronzed...
and so is my cat.
About my libraryThese are books I've read, not always books I OWN.
I read "adult" books in the summer and YA books in the school year so that I can recommend/pass books on to "my" kids. (not a teacher, I volunteer work with advanced readers in 6th grade.) It's my 4th year doing this, so all former kids are still "my" kids!
Currently/Recently Read
I am trying to read 200 books before the end of the year, so I'm mostly trying to race through 200 page books and adding all the books I read but forgot to add.
Fire (companion book to Graceling)done Fantastic, I liked this better than Graceling. (need to write review!)
The Monsters of Templeton done Wow, so good. Stayed up late to finish it kind of book.
If I Stay done Read this in a day, it was good, a little sad, but good.
Tombstone Tea done Ok, good on the creepy, but a little disjointed.
Creepers done Same author, less disjointed, still good on The Creepy.
Suite Scarlet done I really enjoyed this, it was cute and well written. Think I'll find more by this author.
Changeling - Sherman done Young, more MG than YA. Lots of different fairy creatures.
Into the Wild (skimming)I intended to just skim this before giving it to one of my kids, but I got interested and read the whole thing. Now I guess I'll have to watch the movie.
Me, My Elf and I done Cute, and funny. Elves seem to be more new agey hippies than mythical creatures. Nothing fantastic about this book, but a solid read.
The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks done Now this WAS fantastic, loved her voice, loved the typical teenage story that managed to be a little deeper than it seemed on the surface. Read right through it in about 24 hours. Recommend!
Tears of a Tiger (for school)done A good kids-read-out-loud book.
Goddess Boot Camp (sequel to Oh. My. Gods.)done Enjoyed this, not quite as good as Oh My Gods.
Kiss of Life - Generation Dead done Also, not quite as good as the first one.
Madapple done Wow, very strange, very beautifully written. I liked it, but it's really not for everyone.
Teen Angst? Naaah . . . A Quasi-autobiography done Quick and lol funny in parts.
Story of a Girl done Good, very true to life and fairly graphic.
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian done Wow, this was sooo good. Graphic but totally real with some deeper issues.
The Fifth Child done Well written and strange. I liked it!
Lush -Natasha Friend done Very dramatic, but good. Story about an alcoholic dad.
Once was Lost - Sara Zarr done Alcoholic Mom. Not as good as her previous books, more a mystery than a relationship book.
Playing in Traffic - Giles done Ok, there were some pretty good parts.

Recently Abandoned Books:
Touch the Dark - Karen Chance (not sure about this one, she seems to stop in the middle of the action to give you 2 pages of backstory. I'm hoping she'll stop doing that as the story moves on.) I've put this down, will pick it up again at some point.
To Be Read Pile:
My TBR piles were where the Christmas Tree needed to go, so I've sadly packed them away. (I dunno why, I LIKE looking at them!) I've decided to add them to my LT library under the tag TBR, just to keep track of them.

Are the colors wonderful there? The leaves are changing in the mountains, but they've just started here. At least the mosquitoes will soon be gone!

Not much - I'm 43.
Let's plan on exchanging. I'll send you one from Kingston and you can send me one from Maine. I've never had any cards sent from Maine, nor have I been there, so any of your choices would be nice. Even if we've got the same stuff, I bet your stuff is more niftier - just a feeling I've got!
PM me your address.

I can probably squeeze one more into a bubblemailer before it goes over the threshold, so I will reserve #4 for you as well. :)
posted by vikitty at 7:56 pm (EST) on Sep 29, 2009
I hadn't seen your comment to me here before I mentioned the airmail bit before. It's not a very big book, and may just sneak through at what we call "large letter rate" which is cheaper for airmail that the parcel equivalent is for surface. But even if it doesn't, at that weight the difference between airmail and surface is only a couple of $$. So I reckon you deserve to get it much quicker than 3 months. *lol*

In any case, summer vacation is here and since the library system here is offering loads of activities for children, I am spending a lot of time hanging about in the various branches. I was at the main library today and picked up a copy of Millicent Min (the main library is too large to allow me to wander through the Adult areas while the kids are in the Children's section). I just finished my early reviewer book and needed something light and entertaining to take the taste out of my mouth.
I'm glad you liked the 19th Wife. Have you visited the author chat? He's there until the 12th.

I read the Tough Guide to Fantasyland maybe a year ago and I agree, it's definitely a "here and there" type-read. Too much snark gets abrasive after awhile! But in smallish doses, it's good leavening :-)

So, thank you for your generous offer, but it may just be time for me to live within my means. I asked my brother-in-law to bring me a few books and audio books for the kids when he flew over from Germany and he brought a suitcase full--including several audio CDs for me in German. They are not exactly what I would have chosen for myself (Stephanie Meyers in German anyone?) but the kids are well supplied and next time he visits I will get him to bring a stack of Cornelia Funke.
Daffodils are the surest sign of Spring I know. Here they bloom after the tulips, strangely enough, but I am ordering more bulbs so that the flowerbeds can be full of color at the earliest opportunity. I have even found a kind of lilac that is supposed to bloom this far south.
Soccer season has begun here! I hope you are enjoying your chauffeuring duties as much as I am!

Child 44 was good, wasn't it? And nicely set up for a series! I've begun "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", which is good but then I read that the author wrote all three and then died before they were published. That's just heartbreaking. Oh dear, I think I may have to go make chocolate chip cookies.

Hope you are not living under a big pile of snow, with moose on top. We have had a "cold snap" with below freezing temperatures well into the morning. The kids have been doing their special snow ritual (pajamas inside out, one sock with a penny in it and a spoon under the pillow at night) to no avail, but we do get frost on the cars in the morning. You now have permission to complain about eighty degree weather come August.

#3 - That's very kind of you - I did check the books we have in common, and there aren't any of the ones I'm missing covers for. That's quite a library at 1,400 + books! Most impressive.
Thank you :)
I have been getting books every birthday and I've been to lots of flea markets where they sold books. And every time I go on holiday I leave with a suitcase with only clothes and return with lots of books.... I still have one shelf to enter, but those are mostly Dutch books and school books and a few Disney comics. I don't think those covers are useful for you either...
My books are spread over 3 locations though: in my parents' house in a bookcase, storage in my parents' house, and bookcases in my grandfather's house [where I live most of the time]. Later in my house I want a large bookcase where I can put in all my books (^-^).
I have read lots from the library too (entire children's section before it moved to another location, and suddenly they had way more books!) and from my parents' bookcase (I think they even have more books than I do).

Just started Evermore, only about 50 pages in, not too impressed so far. I haven't read Twlight yet, but I think I've gotten enough input I get the basic concept of it. So I'm glad to hear that Evermore isn't exactly (or as your daughter says anything) like Twlight. Maybe I was just too fast to judge, especialy since the back cover says that Meyer fans will like the book. How old is your daughter? I have an 11 y.o. brother that I talk books with all the time.

And as for Stephen King...I know that he's moving over into literary fiction, but I find I'm a little less excited about him as time moves on. There was a long stretch in the middle (Hearts in Atlantis, Rose Madder, Bag of Bones) when I would count on loving the book, but that last one was a struggle to finish. I would still totally love to spend an evening talking with him, much more than with most writers, but the gilding is off the rose, at least for me.
NaNo is consuming me, as is normal, I guess. I have read less this month than I did the month I was preparing everything for a trans-Atlantic move.

I'm reading "Son of a Witch" right now and really enjoying it. I read "Wicked" back in the day and have liked all Maguire's books. I went camping over the weekend and needed a book battered enough to be suitable for roughing it. I love the way he creates these complex worlds that enhance and subvert the original tales.
A few leaves are beginning to change and we bought bags of rare apples in a small mountain town. Down here the small towns have the added weight of astonishing poverty and Confederate flags, but you'll have uncomplicated foliage up there. Enjoy.

Not a problem - you did answer the post :) I just wanted to make sure you knew. The book(s) has supposedly been sent; I say supposedly as I thought they would have arrived by now, but if it is the other side of the country it can take over a week. Hopefully it will arrive early next week - I will send you the link from the BM site when it does. If it is not too heavy I will send it air mail as often there is not a huge difference in cost, but a huge difference in time.
Glad I could snag a book for you,

And on a completely different note, Alex's voice is what made "Everything is Illuminated" sing for me. And his blind chauffeur Grandfather's seeing eye bitch. And the story of the fallen potato. The magic realism in the village bits were weak.
Well, off to my son's fifth birthday party - must load everything into the car and then spend the afternoon supervising ten kindergartners all hopped up on cake. Both children are already about as over-excited as humanly possible without vomiting. And the husband has used up all of his slender supply of tolerance.

The Tuesday Next books are well worth reading! Although this is one case where you do really have to read them in order. The first one is "The Eyre Affair" and I kept reading snippets to my husband. He ended up reading them as well. I love the idea of a world where art and literature are worth fighting over and there is a fantastic description of a book sale involving shoppers vaulting over shelving and pulling derringers on one another. I read it just before the library sale and was bitterly disappointed at the polite and restrained behavior of Greenville's bibliophiles.
Thank you!

I actually enjoyed Jonathan Strange a lot, length and all. But I've always liked long books. And Heartsick is pretty good (but disturbing). I don't think you absolutely *have* to read the first one. Just know that in the first book there was a female serial killer and a detective who suffers from a form of Stockholm Syndrome about her.

I spent the weekend actually entering all my books into my Librarything catalog. The quantity of dust behind the books was a little embarrassing, but, with only a few shelves to do, my books are neatly organized and alphabetized. Also, they are sitting on dust-free shelves. I have many, many books that I haven't read and really want to. Must arrange more time in each day.

Thanks for the information about the BoB. I was hoping to cultivate self-control instead! I do get a few mooches each week, the problem is that as soon as I have more than 5 points, I feel compelled to add recklessly to my wishlist. It's now over 250 and growing...And my TBR pile on the bedside table is leaning precariously, the shelves in the living room have books stacked on top of the rows, there are a few books piled on the piano...

I've heard of the Millicent Min books before but I never actually picked one up. I think one of my sisters did though and mentioned it to me because the plot sounds familiar. Hmm...

I have gotten an early reviewer book each of the three times a batch was offered since I signed on. It is even better than getting a book through BookMooch! Of course, the one I'm currently waiting for is about incest, so I am hoping it is very well written indeed.

I won't be able to send it for about a week; I hope that's okay!
As for the 1995 edition of the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, I would LOVE to have your copy.
Cheers,
Nancy

As for Stewart O'Nan...try something else by him. He sets most of his books among the strip malls and decaying industrial towns of the American Northeast and I love his sense of place - he makes a mall or a chain restaurant worth writing about. I liked "Snow Angels" and his newest "Last Night of the Lobster" is fantastic and also very short. But wait til spring is really going; there always seems to me tons of dirty, melting snow piled up on the edges of the pages of his books and since you're in Maine it might not seem so exotic!

I have requested that you become my friend on BookMooch.
I am just enjoying BookMooch so much more (and I loved it before) since I found the LT BookMooch group. Diversity is great, but there is enormous comfort in finding a group of like-minded and friendly people.
